Instead of stopping in Dubbo you could go the extra 65km and stay in Gilgandra. Small town, friendly people and the motels rates are very reasonable. As Gilgandra is supposedly halfway between Melbourne and Brisbane many travellers stay overnight so there's lots of accommodation and bookings aren't necessary outside of school holidays.
