Yep - Drive says that Mitsubishi recently lodged paperwork to register the Galant and Galant GTVi names for use in Australia.
I've had a look of the newspaper clipping on another site and it could very well just be a US Galant mule driving round with a car-bra on - whilst MMAL were using the US Galant as the basis for the magna replacement, I wasn't expecting it to be an exact copy!
MMAL - "Mitsubishi says 70 per cent of the new car has been redesigned in comparison to the US-market PS41 Galant. Much of the effort has been directed at the interior which has drawn some criticism in the stateside model."
Here's info on the engine - its a 3.8L and in US spec delivers around 172kw but I've heard rumours of an aussie 192kw mill. Torque, yet again based on the US version of the 6G75 is 340NM.
