Now this isn't a licence to speed but it at least shows signs of 'clear thought'...

"We were basically told not to bother pulling people over because of the distance between the (speed) signs along the road," one inner-eastern suburbs officer said.
"The logic is that they could've come from any one of the side streets that link up where the limit was 50 kilometres. How are they meant to know that the street they've entered is only 40 kilometres if there's no signs around for another couple of hundred metres?"
The officer said police lawyers had told them to caution motorists travelling over the limit if any action at all was to be taken.
