I half agree with you
But, I think families are now not sticking to the one car any more which is where the Falcon and Commodore proved so versatile.
I think the typical modern household has an SUV or dual cab AND the small, economical run about. Hence the sales of both of these types of cars are strong.
One is used as the to and from work vehicle (cheapish to buy and operate, easy to operate in traffic) and the other is used for carrying the occasional load (moving house or to uni for kids) and general weekend work with the ability to take the whole family with you if needed.
