Long gone now, just haven't changed my avatar.
Had the Ranger tuned with EGR delete, went brilliantly for 8 months, then one day it decided to circumvent the EGR valve shutdown whilst towing and threw a CEL.
Took it back to the tuner who admitted they have more trouble with tuned Rangers than any other vehicle.
They fitted blanking plates which eliminated any further chances of it happening again but said it had swollowed a heap of uncooled exhaust gas which could shorten its life expectancy.
I asked him what he would do, he said he'd be hesitant to keep it.
I said what would you replace it with, he said Hilux 2.8l.
Low k Hilux 2.8l was out of the budget but during our searching we stumbled upon a 1KD Prado, the Wife always wanted a Prado so subject to inspection the decision was taken from my hands.
The tuner offered to go over it for us, he said it was really good, had been tuned/EGR delete already.
That made me nervous but he said they do heaps of them and not to stress.
Only thing he cautioned about was injectors, a common fault on 1KD engines, so I had them done and havent looked back.
The Ranger was a great vehicle dont get me wrong, but the Prado does everything we need only with less noise and more comfort.
