i hope for your sake, that you dont get your P's after July 1st 2008... 4 years on them mate and a two year system....
i think the whole P plate situation needs to be revised and thought through properly like the kennet government did (125kw-1tonne, 3.5 litres per tonne).

I don't think anyone who watches the news or drives on the road would disagree that there are a large number of P platers out there driving high powered cars with little ability. If the new laws can reduce the number of deaths in this high-risk category then good on them.

What sucks for the majority of P platers is they have to suffer because of the actions of the minority, and you can't have different rules for different people - according to the law everyone has the same skill level when it comes to driving. You never will know if these laws will save your *** someday too.

Having said that, I drove an XA GT and 351 XB Fairmont on my P's and it would SUCK to only be allowed to drive 6 cylinders.

the thingthat gets me is the people who seem to kill/die in these crashes are usually already breaking the rules... tightening them up like this is just going to **** all the P-platers off (me included) and make them want to break them... pointless in my mind, they were fine as they were.... now they are just getting stupid.

Personally I think all states should adopt a Motorbike license style 8 hour course over 1 or 2 days for someone to get their L's. Currently the system is that anyone with an unrestricted license can teach a new driver, regardless of their ability to teach (or even drive). That way i think these calls for restrictions on size, or curfews, or limitations on passengers would be less important.

The structure of the motorbike courses is great for first timers, it teaches competence in one skill before moving onto another, something that is a little lacking in the current Car L structure where a written test is all you need before you start pointing a large automobile at other road users. I know from my own experiences 15 years ago learning to drive on a 5 acre bush block, that getting some practice down before having to deal with other cars is great, but this is hardly practical for 90% of Australians these days.

In NSW these laws take effect on the 1st of July this year. So i dont see why they wouldnt happen in VIC... These states seem to copy each other on most things they bring in for p platers...

The new power laws are ******* stupid!

No v8's
No high performance 6cyls.
No turbo or supercharged cars.
No performance enhancing modifications

So, you can drive a N/A s2000 Vtech what will own most v8's on the road.

And you can drop a N/A 20b rotary into your mazda 323.

Or you can drive a brand new 190kw bf falcon what will destroy most 5L's

But putting a highflow air filter on your 1980's holden barina is ILLEGAL

The power to weight laws were perfect imo.

i would consider 20b(didn't know there was such an animal) rotary into your mazda 323 to be a performande enhancing mod if it is a more powerful motor than standard ( I know little about rotary rice burners) and who knows they might consider a 190 Kw BF to be a high performance 6 seeing as you said it can eat some 5L cars for breakfast. that having been said this thread should be in the pub

im fairly sure u can put a exhaust system and pod filter because theoretically they said no 'engine' mods and it sorta isnt apart of the 'engine' because they are more looking for superchargers and turbos and bored out engines ect so i dont think a h/f air filter wouldnt bother them to much. i emailed them and the new power/weight is 115kw so it works with ba's and au's and so forth.

So hang on, if you've already got your probationary license before July 1st, 2007, do the new (no V8's and no Turbo's) laws not apply to you?

Yeah, don't apply.

I'd like to see a proper system put in place instead of just bans everywhere. Something to do with advanced driver courses. I know it'd be hard to police, but perhaps only higher trained P's could drive higher powered cars?

Just because you P platers think that the road is a race track. I've seen you.

if you already have your P's, you go by the old rules.
if you get your P's after the 1st, you go by the new rules.
