Been looking at K&N snorkels as well as SS Big Mouth which are both about 300 bucks.
What are people here doing? Is it a simple bolt on job? What about factory (t series) alternatives? What about replacing the airbox with a pod filter?? What sort of power am I looking at? Cheers! : |

ss snorkel isn't a bolt on, you need to cut a bigger hole in your airbox.
Alot of people (like me) get the xr6t snorkel but don't expect much improvement. positives for the xr6t snorkel is that it's bolt on. |

So you can just order a xr6t snorkel from the local ford parts dealer?
Whats the difference over the regular intake? What about the Typhoon intake? Thanx! |

ebay
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/FORD-AU-WIDE-...QQcmdZViewItem They don't call them xr6t snorkels but they are the same. Difference is it's a fair bit bigger then the normal intake and you will notice a bit better acceleration but make sure you get one of these http://cgi.ebay.com.au/K-N-Air-Filte...QQcmdZViewItem Typhoon snorkel is the same (I think) BUT it has a lower snorkel too. They are about $80, but you will get the same result with a bit of plastic piping, which a few other members have done. |

I use Tickford snorkle, Front of the airbox cut out, K&N Xstream pod in the box, and a mandrel bent three inch intake. It is really hard to do it in the factory airbox, but its worth it, it stays a little cooler, and its legal.

yea i noticed an improvement when i got the k&n ss induction but im not sure how much of an improvement it was because i got the exaust done at the same time.. but i do know that the ss induction isnt a bolt-on job they have to cut a hole in your air box to fit it.. it doesnt look that hard of a job but the xr-6t one is very populare and very easy to fit. i think you will notice more with the k&n ss one though..

it bolts in the stock location
its just alot bigger overall the stock pipe just pops off and the new one pops on and the 2 screws in the bit above the radiator get the XR6T intake snorkel from ford (it replaced the XR8 tickford item)

On a side note: I put in my K&N filter today, drove around for a bit and i did notice it being a little more responsive, i was actually quite suprised cuz i wasn't expecting anything

i feel so honored... i'm an internet celebrity... anyways the high flow panel filter and the xr6t snorkel or ebay equivalent, which will be cheaper no doubt, seems to be the way to go as it's very easy to replace, i think the pod filter requires some mucking around due to the larger ID of the pipe?(4" where the stock box has 2 and 1/2") i think you get a better induction noise. with the full ss induction system i don't think you'll see a much bigger gain for $300 odd plus fiddling around fitting it. i would think you may as well get a G&D type system like casper: http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthr...0&page=4&pp=25
another idea is to replace that 2and 1/2" pipe from the airbox all of this won't really give you more power but it will make it feel a lot smoother and probably increase fuel economy slightly. real gains are seen in exhaust/headers/cam ect. and just a warning... DON'T TELL THEM WHAT IT'S FOR AND DON'T LISTEN WHEN THEY SAY THINGS LIKE "it won't fit" sorry about the long post.

Cheers for the info!
I need to get ahead of my my mums XR6 VCT I was telling her about the modifications I had planned for my Fairmont and when she got her tax back she stole all my ideas and put them into her XR6 : Thus why I am booking in for competition extractors and getting a good cold air intake system now! Can't be overtaken by the olds in their damn sheepskin seat cover, beatle playing XR6 that's just embarassing! |

You could go G&D box - they certainly have good results, or you could make one of your own like this one:
9" "Big Bertha" K&N Pod: $93 from repco 1.2mm aluminium sheet offcut from metal place :$15 Fake metal intake pipes (one straight, one 90 degree, cut to suit) : $40 from supercheap Silicon joiner $10 from supercheap Clamps $10 from supercheap Paint to paint any colour you want <$20 Total Cost $168 (raw) or $188 painted, plus around 8 hours of fun (labour) G&D airbox including 9" K&N Pod: $600 odd Cheap and tacky (sorry BD) carbon film: around $15 I doubt the additional $400 odd is worth any extra power, but it is certainly a nice design and professionally made.
