I do 28 day stints away on the mines so my Car sits around allot, anyway my Grandfather who is 80 had a bit of ruining around to do a few days ago and thought he would give My XR6 Turbo a bit of a drive and a wash for me since I was away.

get's pulled up by the cops for speeding. some young copper hiding behind a pole who properly just thought he nabbed a 24Yo Smart A$% I.E> ME LOL.

Politely he tells the officer that he is sorry and that this is his grandsons car he had never really driven it before, as it was quite a bit faster/ powerful than his own car's (Classic Merc and a Honda) and that it had caught him out, also that this was his first speeding/ fine in 60 years of driving!!

Police officers response, So What, not my problem mate! (With attitude)


Now ya wonder why the police have a image problem ( if i had been in the passenger seat, there would have been a show some respect to ya elders ( with a few F's in the mix aswell)

Now I'm sure everyone has a differing opinion on stuff like this, but i feel simply, a be more careful in the future sir and a official warning would have been more appropriate to such a seasoned driver.

He son in Law who has been a cop for 35 years simply said, back in the day there would have been commonsense used and a fine more than likely would NOT have been issued, and more or less the Guys in Traffic are a bunch of Insert bad words hear.

It's coming up more and more and i have experienced it my-self, Got sprung for a random inspection on my Gun safe a few months ago when i did a Rifle addition, the older officer 40 or so, I spoke to politely gave him all the information and he was friendly and easy going even had a bit of a laghf with him, the younger officer acted like he was trying to catch me out on anything he could like i was a potential criminal!

Sorry, this is an old chestnut. I was in the thin blue line 35 years ago & I heard the same argument form people then. This one goes in a continual circle. Your grandfather just got a judicious one! It's the luck of the draw.

Exactly. If it was a young person, they would have been fined regardless of their driving record. Shouldnt be any different for older people.

Let the old bugger be, 60yrs of no speeding tickets should count for something, just needs to write a letter to the powers to be about his driving record and they should wipe his slate clean, wish i could have a clean driving record at 80+

I’m with you on this one. Police have discretionary powers and providing the offence was at the lower end of the scale, a warning would have probably done the trick here.

I’m not saying that he shouldn’t obey the law, just show a little bit of common sense. And before the usual bunch of parrots get up and say, don’t break the law and you’ll have nothing to worry about… how many here have been let off a minor offence with just a warning?

If he has a good driving record he can write to police and they will let him off.
The copper writes the ticket and the authorities decide if he is deserving a warning after really seeing his record etc

Its a matter of time before the officer gives attitude to the wrong person (MP with connections, magistrate etc...) and undergoes an attitude correction.

Hand out the fine - sure, but dont be rude about it.

As far as I'm concerned, ANY police member should be professional and courteous at ALL times. They are the face of the law and a face of the public. They should call EVERYONE Sir and Ma'am regardless of age.

I remember a couple of years ago, they closed down Oxford Street and George Street and I had to get to Potts Point so whilst stopped at the lights, I asked a police officer where I should go because I'd been down as far as Randwick and back up to the city and couldn't get across.

His response was "Not my problem, I don't care, move along". I went off at him along the lines of "Firstly, you WILL call me Sir. Secondly, I asked you a general question nicely. If you don't know, just say so. Don't give me attitude or I will report you to your sergeant".

Having said that, I have come across alot of helpful and courteous police officers. Its like always, a small minority ruins it for the rest of them.

My son has just sat his police exam and is questioning whether he is "doing" the right thing. Laws are set for a reason. I do not want my son questioning whether he has chosen the right career path or not.

I am not saying there are not exceptions to the rule....of course there is...but why exclude one group but not the other? I really can understand why the OP has a concern about this, but I am a mother of someone trying to get into the Police force and why should one rule apply to a certain part of the community and another part not?

Rules are set and have to be followed. That is all I am saying. As a mother...I try and teach and PREACH what is right.

This has been the unwritten rule since Jesus played full back for the Jerusalem thirds. There will always be different rules for different people.

but what happened to using you brain and looking at the hole picture and assessing every situation as it stands, we are becoming the bubble rap Black and white country.

I.E the old man is a Veteran Cop and has had the less than pleasant Job to work in departments and be on cases that i would never want to deal with and too me his son it shows badly, too the point he sat me down when i was 17 when i was about to apply for the police force and said i don't want my son becoming a Cop I don't want it i won't allow it.

The one thing I have picked up from him is just cause the Law is written in Black and white it doesn't mean he has to do his Job in black and white, asses evry situation as it comes at you that there is more than one way to skin a cat ya don't jump thou hoops for points cause not evry one is the bad guy, not anymore apparently that generation is long since retired or like dad who's past the point of giving a .... the % focuses on politics, points and climbing the ladder.

I have a good friend who's a cop and he lets most people off with warnings if they are speeding and fines only who he has to, he does have to fine a few since that's his job. But he usally only fines people doing more than 15ks over. If they are just close to 30 over he writes it down to 20 something but he's consistant and would fine me just the same as anyone else. If he's in town and there's people around he's more strict of course but out on the highways here there's not much traffic around here and no real danger to crash so it's fair enough to bend the rules to suit.

We lent a car of ours to my grandmother once in the 80s. She had a Torana in km/h and or car was still in mph. The funny part is when we got home from our 2 month holiday. She told us how 60 felt really fast around town in our car compared to hers :P

well ive just finished my first fortnight since losing my liscence for 6 months due to points and even though i dont like the way the Police force works these days as revenue raisers i know they have a job to do and i got caught sneaking over the limit between 7 to 16kmh each time where i thought it was safe(never on side streets),
i accept i took the risk and i got caught ,
I would be happy if one of my chidren decided to become a cop,but i would remind them to always be fair to people they come across and treat them the same way you would expect to be treated.

Hopefully he is a fair minded person as has been said by others not everything is black and white in life and some of our new laws are quite unfair in certain situations,and a good cop should be able to tell the difference.

while we should respect all elders - was it not an elderly driver who ran into the building where sophie delizio and molly wood were injured. maybe he had gone for 50 years without a fine as well

unfortunately we must all be aware when on the road, no matter how young or old we are. while there is good and bad in all work forces, the emergency services have a huge rate of stress involved in their job. i am sure that all of us would be at risk of having a less tolerant attitude to road users, if we had to go to the scene of some accidents that our police force do

i personally have not met any bad police officers - but then i just accept the consequences of what i was doing, because i was doing it. they have always been polite to me and i have always been polite back. it can be amazing how far manners can go

I’ve had more than my fair share of run ins with elderly drivers who quite frankly, should have handed their licence in years ago, although I’m not suggesting that this would be the case with the thread starter. There have been a few occasions where my tone and language were totally out of line when I’ve been discussing their driving and parking with them in the past.

Sometimes it can be a little difficult to respect one’s elders when they park hard up against the front of your car, a foot and a half over the line and when you move your vehicle to inspect the damage, they deny all knowledge of it, even though their car is still a foot and a half in your parking space.

Without turning the thread onto an old versus young argument, there will always be good and inept drivers regardless of their age group.
