Smile performance oput of 1600 x flow

ive got a mk2 i would like to get more power into the car and have been toying with the idea of goin jap engined. buut id love to keep the engine ford, and jus wondering wat sorta of performance could i get out of the 1600? im in 2 minds n need some help trying to weight up the pro's n cons of both engines when i say other engine i mean sr20det lol.
