Default Mobile disc brake machining

Your thoughts and or experiences with this ?.
Had a guy come around yesterday to do the front discs on a mates el, was a bit dubious about getting em done whils`t still on the car but after seeing it done (And taking video with his permission ) was impressed. We took the wheels and calipers off so the total cost ? $65
Made a quick y-tube vid of it

lots of little mechanical workshops bolt the machine to the discs on the car and do there own disc skimming. Not a new thing at all.

Yep and even the big ones will more then likely still own an On-car machiner. Its good for cars where its not so simple to take the disks off, e.g. its part of the hub, then an on-car becomes more time efficient.

Anyone know if these guys can do BA Gt standard brakes. I have been told by people that slotted brakes can not be machined.

Yes they can be done,
Slowest feed rate with the finest cut.
However i would take them off the car and take them into a reputable shop.

Biggest thing to watch with brakes such as those on BA GT is that generally once worn they are below the minimum thickness already or close enough that machining would make them undersize

IMO fit NEW rotors...
Since asbestos has been taken out of pads as fiction material ..
Both the pads and rotors need changing more often...

Nothing wrong with machining discs on car/4WD etc etc.

As for any undersizing worry. The blokes that do any sort of machining, check them before going ahead. That includes mobile brake machinists

I'm guessing badly I saw it done on a car 15 or 20 years ago.

How long have they been around?

With brake set up like the XB 9" on car machining was the only option. It has been around for ages

On the car machining has been around since the 70s. It's actually better to machine them on the car as it takes into account any hub run out. As long as the wheel bearings have no play and they are in good condition there are never any issues. And yes you can machine slotted brakes.
