Hey I just bought a 1.6L Mk 2 Escort and the breather on the rocker cover was just a hose hanging down one side of the engine bay which this dripped lots of oil. so I tried plugging it into the carburettor and heaps of smoke started to pour out the exhaust. I then tried a filter which quickly clogged up with oil. how do I fix this?

What Do You Call Lots Of All 10mls Or 1 Ltr . Has Your Breather Cap Got A Filter Inside It .. Is Your Cap New Or Still The Old One . Over 40 Years Old .. Look At Burtons Site In The Uk Mite Get Some Ideas .... I Reakon If You Are Loosing Heaps Of All , Your Motor Is Shaged Big Time ... To My Knowlage ... Cheer |

yea it's gone through about 100ml in two weeks, the plug has a filter in it but it is really old.

Hi mate,
I would suggest a compression test first up, sounds like you getting blow by, a sign of worn rings. cheers |

I checked the compression and the rings are completly destroyed. I have bought a wrecked escort with a pinto that i am in the proccess of putting in at the moument. |

no worries, are you going to do anything to the motor before you put it in? ie seals, go fast bits etc?

Iv done the sump gasket, rocker gasket, radiator hoses, alternator belt, oil filter, fuel filter, manifold gasket and painted the engine. the compression, clutch, clutch casing and bearing is good. also it ran pretty good before i pulled it out but if you have any other ideas i'm pretty new to working on cars and any help is good.

go fast bits are good but any good ideas on low income i found this dodgy looking fuel injection thing. Is it worth a shot?

Injection is good, but that kit doesnt look to healthy. its also a turbo kit so youd also have to buy a turbo. besides that when you go injection youll have to run a lift pump, surge tank, high pressure pump, get your distributor set up with a crank angle sensor, computer, wiring and tune. if you want to run a turbo you also put more pressure on the motor and it will wear out quicker.
do you want to run injection? I have a pinto injection manifold, distributor set up for injection and a computer that is suppose to be able to run it... another avenue would be a cam and good set of carbies (depending on how far you wanted to go) |

^^âre you running the 2 litre or the 1.6? im not sure if the manifolds are the same from the 2 litre to the 1.6?

I am running the 2L with a weber carby i was planning on going injected first then turbo when i can afford it. but if injected is really complicated would a cam and a twin weber be a cheap/easy improvment?

6 in one hand half a dozen in the other really to be honest,
fitting twin side drafts is easy, but not exactly cheap, expect to pay about $1000 - $1200. then youll need a manifold im not sure what these go for. to fit a cam youll need to remove the head off the engine as the cam slides out the back of the head (or you can do it when its out of the car) things to bear in mind tho..... any performance modification you do will result in everything including the motor being put under more stress. carbies and cams go hand in hand make sure you pick the right size cam and carbies for your application. and, the bigger the cam the more driveablilty you loose, you dont want to go so big that you no longer enjoy driving you car. |

No worries, i suggest you speak to a webber specialist, they will be able to tell you what size webbers to run and what size jets etc vs cam size and all that. let us know how you go

If going $$$ for twin webber (which admittedly sound great !!) it might just be easier and cheaper to go 2lt for same net effect - more oomph.
Depends if you want to stay closer to 'modified original' I guess. |

Just put a 2L with a 4spd box in after the 1.6L called it quits.
