has anyone bought an engine from the states and can tell me what sort of import tax they had to pay and the process with customs??

I think anything bought from overseas over a grand is subject to GST...but seeing the price difference you usually get with stuff from OS, that's normally no problem and you still end up paying heaps less than you would here for the same item.
Not sure about customs, but any reputable importer already has all that sorted. |

If over AUD 1000 will be subject to:
5% duty (free if USA origin) based on price plus charges to get it to the port. (This is known as the customs value) 10% GST on ( Customs value + duty + freight + insurance) $70 customs user fee. Freight co will also charge locals here. Estimate $200-300 AQIS will also go nuts if its second hand. Will need inspection. May need to be steam cleaned. Estimate $100-350 depending on what needs doing. Customs broker fees $150+ You also need to add transport fees from the wharf/depot unless you pick up yourself. Cheech - Resident AFF customs broker.

Mine cost me $9000US(approx)+10% GST + $700 freight to Bundaberg Qld all up.
