Hi. I'm restoring my 2.0ltr Mk2 Auto and all my labels have faded! Im particularly interested in the wiring that goes to the starter motor and also the alternator. I need the colours and connection types. Some are obvious so are not. The manual I have, have completely different colour codes!

There are (unfortunately) two different sets of colour codes for pre 6/77 and post that date models. Let us know which you have and I'll see what I have.

Thanks for that Russ. The build date on the plates is 09/77 4 door auto. It also looks like they fitted a relay in the engine bay for the auto only, and would like to replace it for a new one as the old ones is in poor condition. I need to know what amp rating it is its only got 4 pins, so I'm assuming its a single pole single throw?

If you take the relay out it should give you some details on rating but yes, it should be single pole, single throw.
I've got the earlier manual unfortunately but I can still probably help with the alternator wiring as they were pretty standard across a lot of models based on whether they are made by Denso, Mitsubishi or Fema. Can probably help with starter too if you can tell me whether it is 3 or 4 wire connection. Cheers Russ

Problem is the relay is a metal one and so corroded I can't see any ratings. The starter motor has one M8 size bolt and 2 male spade connectors. The M8 bolt has the main thick red lead from the battery, but I think theres another smaller red wire too. I know the bottom spade connecter is the black wire and I think the top spade connector has two wires on one spade and I think its red and green. Any help would be great. Cheers |

The M8 bolt is correct - it supplies battery feed.
Red/Light Blue wire supplies 12 volts Red/Light Green wire supplies switched 12 volts If yours has a ballast resistor wire as well (goes to a ceramic resistor) the Red/Light Green wire goes via it (red only for 78-80 models) to reduce 12V down to 7.5V. The wire goes from the second spade connector on the starter motor then splits out to the fuse block and then to coil. Cheers Russ

Most of what you said is spot on except the Red/light blue(not sure about that wire at the mo, the only Red/light blue seems to be the switched wire for the relay, which then becomes a black wire via a spade connector. I've drawn a little diagram, I'm hoping its correct as it is, so I don't have a fire! hand drawn wiring.pdf |

That looks right from what I can see - looks like some of it has been replaced from the join onwards. Might be a good idea to fit a quick disconnect on the battery and have someone handy when you try it.
