'Ford's decision to use Toyota in its "comparative" advertisements has been labelled "fantastic" by Toyota's Australian chief.
David Buttner, who heads up the Japanese brand's local arm, has no problem with Ford's decision to favourably compare its cars to Toyotas in its marketing and press materials. "I think it's fantastic they are prepared to use our vehicles in their advertisements," Buttner told Drive. So far Ford has run national television campaigns that highlight the advantages of the Ford Kuga over the similar Toyota RAV4 and the Ford Ranger against the market-leading Toyota HiLux ute. But Buttner was unconcerned by his vehicles being portrayed in such a manner by a rival brand. "Every company chooses to promote and advertise their company in they way see fit," Buttner said. "That will continue in the future. We have a great product line-up and we're proud of it. It's been very successful in the marketplace and we'll keep growing it to make sure it's successful in the future." Ford Australia's recently installed boss Graeme Whickman defended the campaign and strongly opposed the characterisation of them as 'attack ads'. "The reason I dislike [the word attack] is because any decent human being or any decent brand doesn't start out by chest-beating," Whickman said recently. And don't expect Toyota to hit back with comparative ads of its own. "It's never been something we've employed, but each to their own," Buttner said." http://www.drive.com.au/motor-news/t...22-gh79wm.html

Always thought those comparative ford vs toyota ads were rather lame.. Aren't ford in a way violating a trademark by featuring another brand's logo and badge in their own ad, without prior written permission? Isn't that the reason why car wash detergents with a BA Xr6 on the label, always showed one with the Ford badge removed..

Car wash detergent ads are different - they're clearly not using the Falcon for comparative purposes. One of the reason why car wash ads (etc) doesn't show badges on cars is because they could arguably be liable for passing off and/or misleading and deceptive conduct because it suggests that Ford are endorsing the product they're selling.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QqWB6gtQPw I'm pretty sure Ford aren't endorsing the product. A viewer might also be mislead by this ad into thinking that Ford Falcons have inferior tyres fitted that don't allow proper braking. Wasn't Peter Brock also in an ad in the 90s for Bridgestone where he and his mother were both in white VS Commodores, with logos visible? |

Ford need to reassess their advertising. I don't like the direction they are taking, the comparisons are not the way to go, if they want to stick to them then find another way to communicate them.
I'd rather they focus more on their products than trying to compare to others. A good example is the Hyundai Sonata commercial, the guy has a new car but has a broken leg so has his neighbour drive it. The neighbour enjoys it so much that even after the owner has recovered, doesn't want to give up the drive. It is a more positive advertisement. Ford haven't done a decent ad in years. Car journos do a better job (constantly labeling Focus and Fiesta as dynamic bench marks). Ford should encompass the racing history of the company, "The Rally Bred Fiesta," kind of like that racing has brought about a better product (i.e Audi).

Agree, rubbishing the opposition in sales is poor tactics.
even if what they say is true

If they're going to do it, may as well do it properly.
A video of a Ranger and Hilux side by side each pulling a 2T boat uphill would do it for me. |

...oh, and Ford? While you're at it...stop calling them "trucks" repeatedly ad-nauseum.
In case you hadn't noticed, this is Australia...we call them "utes"...it's not the USA, so don't try to make us into it... |

Haven't Ford got record low sales this year while running these ads?
I don't get it, the Ranger was getting such a good reputation amongst traditional ute buyers, but now the Ranger seems like a bit of a joke with these ads. The worst one was the Kuga ad with the Ford marketing woman overtaking a 4 cylinder Rav4 and all hipster press and journalists saying "really?" when told it has more power than a Rav4 -because the Rav4 is known as a real powerhouse.... Although I do think the girl in blue in the dealer showroom ads is stunning though |

They might want to look at pricing as well. One look around the roads shows they're being slaughtered by the Triton in particular and you even see more of those Chinese utes than Rangers. Shame, because even though we own and love a Triton, we really liked the looks of the Ranger, especially the XLT versions.
Literally the only thing that kept us out of a Ranger was the eye-watering price of a diesel automatic twin cab with a canopy...fifty bloody grand plus? Please... |

Except they are not utes as they are not based off passenger CAR platforms. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ute_%28vehicle%29 I always call my wifes Triton a truck to correctly differentiate it from the real XR6 ute sitting next to it in the carport. |

A truck carries heavy loads is speed limited and requires an upgraded licence . Thinking about it a ranger towing to its limit would be severely speed limited as well I suppose . Hiluxes are limited to 2300 kg which is more in line with the vehicles tare weight, towing something over 1000 kg HEAVIER than you is ummm a bit scary . especially the modern day block of flats sitting 3 foot off the ground that they call a caravan these days . 2011G6E. One of the reason for Fiesta Focus Ranger etc being built in Thailand was to bring price down , hasn't happened. All Fords should be cheaper than they are,

I remember when Holden invented RTS (or something like that) and showed how well their cars went around witches hats while Cortinas and Falcons ploughed through all over the place.
Ford responded with a Falcon driving not around witches hats but Ford racing drivers |

While all cars look the same and drive the same, the deciding factor for one over the other comes down to whether it has overhead grab handles, or alloy wheels or sat nav. Comparative advertising is a valid sales tool in todays market.
Or you could be Mitsi selling triton at chinese prices, that's one way of getting volume......

only reason Toyota sell so many cars is because they've successfully brainwashed the public into believing they are bullet-proof

Another example of more modern utes is our 06 d4d hilux. 340,000kms and only had a new clutch and intercooler (cracked). Where as one of Rangers (2012 3.2 dual car) has been just a peice or crap. Bolts falling out of gear lever. New gearbox, 4x4 switch falling apart. And to top it off our 2.2 flat tray 4x4 ranger's engine blew up (cracked piston), gearbox whined and diff whines and all were replaced within its first 35000kms. And has been nothing but a heapa constantly bringing up engine lights and going in limp mode ever since. I know which brand I trust a lot more.
