Not big news but wonder why the Police FGX XR6 turbo's no longer get the Brembos front brake upgrade. Maybe Ford said that they weren't doing them anymore so you either take them as is or don't bother ringing us. Have seen 2 now with stock brakes.

Yeah just looked on Car Sales and seen a few used ones with Brembos. Maybe the last batch have missed out or it's just the QLD ones that have not got them now.

Probably because they are not allowed to chase the criminals in case they "cause" them to crash....

Boys in blue probably stopped ordering them with Brembos to appease the bean counters. Brembo pads and rotors ain't cheap so having the ability to replace with standard gear over the life cycle of the car would save thousands per car.
Money better spent on donuts and maccas......

In Victoria they get discounts , not freebies anymore. And only if they are in uniform.

From what I know, after every persuit they get taken off the road for a safety inspection that makes a pink slip look like a cake walk. Probably why with the high kays, the persuit cars that troll the Hume from Sydney to Canberra hold any form of value. Monster kays, but turn key reliability. Brakes aren't really important on a freeway I suppose

That seems a tad excessive... Talk about budget inefficiency

And you can be guaranteed that the person who came up with this regulation would have never held a spanner in their life, there 4 years at University has now given them all the life experience they will never need and to justify their job they need to come up with more and more regulations...

its based on a safety issue.. for members & the public.. nothing worse than a Hwy car having completed a high speed chase / stops repeatedly and being thrown back into service quickly & having the same pads or disks fail causing accident.
Vicpol do this to their highway cars (mind you not brembo fitted) after each high speed use.

Also on a side note what's so special about Brembo brakes? Can't you just get equally good brakes without the Brembo name and save a lot of money?
As far as I can tell Brembo is the Sennheiser of the car world and unless you're buying the ultra high end then you're just paying one hell of a brand premium.

From what I remember Brembos were fitted as there was a test or standard that had to be passed and stock SS Commodore brakes passed but stock XR6T didn't, hence the Brembos.

Surely if the standard brakes weren't up to a safe level the manufacturer would fit a better product. Why would the HWP cowboys need any better brakes than us mere minions seem to be able to drive with.Any brakes should be good enough for a quick 5-10 min dash down the highway

Brembo 4 pistons with the standard pads are not good enough for hard driving at speeds between 120-200 kph with repeated braking over some 4-5 minutes- you will suffer massive brake fade. With police HWP doing a high speed chase with heavy braking from high speeds, I would hope the police are provided cars with decent brakes for their safety, and that of the public. 4 piston brembos with upgraded pads are the minimum I would have thought for HWP to give them capacity to safely perform high speed pursuits.

Equipping the HWP cars with big brakes might be expensive but IMHO I'd be $&)(:; my self driving at high speeds in our Falcons without em. You don't need em on the rear , but the front is a MUST have.

There is not a lot of difference in wet boiling temps between 5.1 dot down to 3.1. From memory (I just did pads, rotors & fluid 2 weeks ago) with basic fluid it goes up 20degs celcius. 240c - 3.1 260c - 4.1 280c - 5.1 Having said that one manufacturer claims the same spec range for their race fluid 4.1 to suit 5.1...$13/500mls Also saw fluid for $60/500mls. That will suck moisture & need to be replaced very, very regularly. Last edited by Blem; 13-07-2016 at 09:31 PM. Reason: Edit |

There's a 2015 FGX Turbo ex-NSW HWP patrol car with Brembos for $29990 drive away on carsales, with 85k on the clock. Not bad value and still under factory wty too.
Quite a few of these make it to Vic after heading to auction in NSW.

If these Brembos are so good and so expensive why don't the Cops swap them over for the standard brakes when they get their new pursuit cars?
