Default Camry V6 axed

Looks like the end of the line for the traditional V6 sedan unless you want the virtually unseen Chrysler 300 or much more expensive Stinger. Drove a V6 Camry recently and was impressed.

Thats a shame, it was a good car.
Drove a 2018 model at work a few times, the SX, it sure had some go, and handled really well for a front wheel drive.

You can stull buy a BMW 6cylinder sedan.. Although at a premium price. Sadly the options for a large sedan are dwindling by the year....

The affordable six pack sedan is dead. Consumers want the high seating position of an suv or dual cab. When everyone sits at the same height, we're back to square one.

For the uber market, I wonder if there will be a Camry Cross hybrid, powered by a turbocharged 1.5l 4cyl engine with battery electric rear axle?

Yeah but what car do us gormless fools have to watch out for??presumably some old bloke towing a camper trailer around the high country.probably on the wrong side of the road.

I have never been a fan of the Camry V6. Way too much engine for the chassis. That said, I do like the Camry 4 and Hybrids, which I think are a much better balanced car for its target audience.

It will be interesting to see how the new Mazda 6 (possibly with 6 cylinder RWD) will sell when it comes onto the market. Unlikely to be a family hack given Mazda's attempts to reposition into the upmarket segment.

I must admit to my own surprise, the a large family car no long had any appeal to me. I much rather be driving an SUV (oh, how I miss the Territory).

never driven a camry v6 but the Aurion with its 200 killerwasps struggled with torque steer.

RWD 6cyl mazda 6 interesting move? must take a look

but as you say I'm not interested once you've owned a car like a Territory with handling as good as a sedan you never look back.

Well can't speak about the V6, but I have been driving a hired 2020 Camry Hybrid for the past 2 weeks as a daily driver, while the Pony is in the panel shop after I was rear ended.

To be honest, I'd buy a new one in a heartbeat if I wanted a medium sized no-nonsense reliable sedan!

No, it's not a driver's or enthusiast's car, or anything to get excited about, and we often think of a camry as the car for people who have "given up on life", boring and mundane, but it does everything it was designed to do, and exceptionally well IMO.

For starters, the 4.2 - 5.0 litres per 100kms is outstanding for a car as big as a falcon, with a cruising range well over a 1000 kms on a 50 litre tank.

The leg room in the back seating is great...Much more than an FG Falcon.
The humongous 525 litre boot is deeper and better than the Falcon.

The way the electric motor kicks in together with the ICE on acceleration gives it great torque and pull off the line.

It's quiet, rides well and steers well into corners for a FWD.

If you just want a large sedan, that runs on the smell of an oily rag, Japanese quality and renown Toyota reliability and cheap servicing costs (Average $200 per scheduled service), then it's hard not to look at the Camry Hybrid for circa $36K.

I drove a v6 model the SX for a couple of days, which I guess is Toyota's XR6 and came away very impressed. 224kw and 364nm. 8 speed auto, silky smooth. The cars looks are not what you'd call conservative or boring. Yes it would be better RWD, but if I bought one it would be V6. I can see why I'm in the minority though.

Camrys are the best value for money on the market ,and selling like hot cakes.
Waiting lists have been up to 6 months for hybrids ,and 4 months for petrol.
The highest selling Ascent and Ascent Sport models never had the option of a V6,only the sporty looking SX and top of the range SL had the option .
Clearly everyone wanted the hybrid or 4 cylinder petrol models .

I don't mind the look of the current ones though. They don't look too bad at all. Nowhere near as boring as they used to be.

The RWD Mazda 6 will be an interesting addition. With turbo straight 6 apparently. But depends how much it would cost. Can't see it being comparable to the current 6 which is reasonably priced. They are going to take it upmarket as a cheaper alternative to a smaller 3 series or C class.

Maybe they should have sold it without the badge and simply called it a Stinger. the same way Mustang is sold

Well the whole sedan market is down.

Mazda 6 will be interesting to watch, in theory all the signs are good, I suspect brand snobbery will win.

How many 3 or C buyers get them because of RWD?

It’s still one of the most popular cars on the market ,and the countries top selling sedan.
The new model was never going to sell in the volumes of the previous ones ,as they are fully imported ,and Toyota don’t need to do the volumes that they did to keep the factory going .

I quite like the look of the current Camry and Corolla, they've got really striking designs.

Shame we're losing the V6 option but the Camry is the domain of the beige cardigan brigade so of course they won't pick the option with balls.

Agreed, people who buy camry's don't give a toss about how much grunt it has, how it handles or any of that. They just want a "white good" to move themselves to work and the family from point A to Point B efficiently. The hybrid drivetrain would get alot of people in the door. A V6 with 200+kw would never get a vote over the hybrid. I had an Aurion for a short time as a company car (before I left that company)and didnt mind it.. Was a bloody rocketship compared to the 3 litre V6 VE I had before it....

Objectively they aren't a bad thing my Brother in Law in perth bought a base model hybrid for his wife to replace their Vt Commodore they had owned since new. I drove it last time I was over and as much as it was BORING it was well built, well equipped and comfortable...

While I find the current Camry a little over-styled, at least they are trying now.



Has anyone else noticed Camry's fitted with the quad exhaust that the one pipe on each side is a fake. Although not obvious in the below pic, it's really noticeable when one pipe has carbon deposits and the other is clean.



And a little V6 snarl never hurt anybody.

Back in the 90's Mazda had 1.8l 2.0l, 2.5l and 2.3l (supercharged 2.3) V6 engines. (FWD of course) and the 2.5 was about all you could put through the front wheels of a 626 or MX6 without traction control... 4WS made the top of the range 2.5 V6 FWD more bearable...

The 1.8 in the Eunos 30x wasn't that powerful compared to a similarly sized 4 cyl, but what a delight to row through the gearbox at 7500 rpm!
I had a couple of motoring memories I'll nevert forget driving the 30x demo....
(Exiting the "Devil's Elbow" on the way down the old road to the Adelaide Freeway and winf=ding on the power through a gradual descending left turn shifting from second, to third, to fourth at illegal speeds on that constqant load... The missus didn't talk to me for a week! (After asking "What did you do that for???")

And the MX5 defined handling with it's double wishbone suspension and revvy 1.6 dohc 4 cylinder. I went round the outside on a downhill descening left hand turn, over the double whites, in the middle of winter with the top down and a Bomber Jacket on....

I've sold Benz' and Toyota as well, Camry 4 cyl is an impressive vehicle, but I was the only one to sell one in 6 months at that location, and it was the 4 cyl (apart from the Hybrid Camry which was a 12 month allocation when they dropped the price)

but those Mazdas of the 90's......
