In the market for a new car- rules in thread

Hey there,

Just making sure I'm not missing any models before I pull the trigger on a new ride. Sold my FN Mustang V8 manual, before that I was in an FM Mustang Ecoboost manual, I'm pretty much done with RWD coupes for now, may go back one day. Anyway these are my requirements

-MANUAL only- no auto in any configuration- don't care if its conventional, CVT, DCT, etc I can wait until I'm 70 for that

- TURBO- unless its a ripper of an N/A engine I want PETROL and TURBO engine configuration.

- BRAND NEW/DEMO- I don't want used and don't want to deal with a private sale

- BUDGET $30-$40 drive away

Hyundai i30 N Line manual, falls in your price bracket. Warm hatch. Quite a good car, warranty etc.

Skoda Scala 1.5 turbo six speed manual. starts at 27k.
VW Golf mark 8 1.4 turbo six speed manual starts at 34k.
Hyundai I 30 N Line 1.6 turbo six speed manual. High 30, s maybe.
Ford Fiesta ST 1.5 turbo six speed manual say 37k?
Fiat Abarth turbo 1.4 five speed manual but a coupe 32/40k

Really you probably want Focus ST but its around 47/53.

Fiesta ST
Hyundai n-line sedan (surprise package)

I have no idea what a Skoda Scala is but it looks ok!

VW Golf makes me sleepy just looking at it.

Focus ST is off the list, I've had one before and didn't enjoy it that much. I know its a new engine but doesn't really interest me, plus its very expensive. If only ST-Line came in manual :(

Yes if only SA Focus came in manual!
But there is no demand apart from you and me!

Skoda Scala is the value buy but shhhh dont tell anyone!

I didnt include SUV,s. There are a handful. I just had one as a loan car for 4 days seemed a pretty uninvolved remote driving experience.

It (scala) is sort of a cross between a wagon and a hatch.
I was going to get one but a 16000$ bathroom repair got in the way.
So I bought a five speed manual bare bones Skoda Fabia wagon with an enormous 70 kw and 160nm albeit at 1400rpm at 18.8 driveaway last year.
It has actually massively exceeded my expectations as I use it to commute 152 km a day on motorways and as it has active (radar) cruise control its great.
Done 26600 kms in 11 months issues usb port had fallen in behind dash and handbrake adjustment.

But I would have preferred a Scala especially coming out of a six speed lZ Focus.

Thanks for the input Kevino, I too was looking at a run out Fabia wagon but they seem to be light on the ground. The engine seems very similar to a 1.0 Ecoboost which isn't a bad thing. Obviously the Scala being a 1.4 would be similar to a Focus in a way.

Funnily enough I drove a Focus 1.5 litre ST turbo when the dealer gave it to me when my Falcon FGX XR8 was in for service.

I was so impressed with the Focus and could not believe it was a 1.5 litre - it felt much stronger. I would have bought it had it come in manual.

As it did not come in manual I went for the Fiesta ST. If you get it watch out-the way the turbo bloom comes on its addictive and the Fiesta ST has a great appetite for eating your licence!!

It is firm, but not unbearably so.

The car eats the drive between Newcastle and Sydney return, and is comfortable on freeways and main roads in Sydney.

I drove a loaded car from Newcastle to Mt Kaputar and back and had a hoot, driving down the mountain from Mt Kaputar on dirt roads reminded me of my old cortina GT rally car with side draught webbers- the handling going down was so good in the dirt- stupendous actually.

I drove from Newcastle to a gaol at Junee and return and it was great on that country run- not harsh at all.

The only thing that is overly harsh is those really pronounced road strips that are mounds that are very steep about 350 high that have been made with a very aggressive profile to slow cars in high pedestrian density areas.

The only ones that I have found absolutely awful anywhere so far are new ones placed in Merewether, I slow down and go over them at 10 kph.

General road strips are not too bad- but very aggressive road strips you will know about- and you just need to slow down for them.

The only thing I found in the Fiesta is the Recaros seem a little small around the outer thigh, I'm not a big person or anything either, how do you find them?

I've tested Feista ST and the i30NLine.....both manuals.

As much as I like the Fiesta the Hyundai 7yr incl track WTY wins me of the 2 and the Coupe shape was my pick, good storage space..
It goes great but so did the Fiesta.
Both dynamite hot hatchs.

I30 Nline and i30N are different beasts. i30N that you are talking about are mid $40’s.

I've never had a three cylinder of any kind but it wouldn't put me off. The Fiesta ST seems like a good (great?) car; perhaps a bit small? Toyota went to a triple for the GR. Plenty of three cylinder bikes about. Suzuki and Kawasaki had two-stroke triples decades ago. MV Agusta might have had a three-cylinder GP bike, but I would have to check to be certain.

Just for you? Or do you have kids, grandkids, dogs?

Maybe if all you need is a Manual Turbo, you should get a motorbike?

I am a strange person, single male, no kids, no wife (happy life?)

Small to medium is a good size, prefer hatch or wagon due to the opening of the boot, liftback even better but no manuals in this body type. Not interested in a bike. I want manual because it adds enjoyment to my drive, I want turbo for the torque (I don't want a diesel) I want a hatch or wagon as they are practical, I don't want an SUV because I'm not 70 yet. Not really that bizarre in requirements I didn't think?

Nah, that's cool, but you didn't specify at first, you just said "Manual Turbo"

Since you're chasing torque, yeah you can disregard my suggestions of the MX5 or 86...

If you want new, in your price range, you seem to be mostly caught with a Hyundai.
If it were me, I'd either stretch my budget, or go for something late-model, and look at a WRX.

Don't get me wrong, I still love my XR4, but that was still only 110kw in a light body, and the newer ones I just can't get my head around the 3-cylinder engine. There's just something unnatural about that, and it would screw with my OCD.

The Fiesta ST 1.5 litre turbo Dragon engine has cam chain drive, port and direct injection (no walnut blasting), a conservative 150 kw, 300 nm torque- and the torque curve is fat.

It feels like a big worked six- similar to a modded Ford alloy 250 straight 6 with holley, cam, head porting, shaved head etc in a Cortina TE or a flat boxer 3.2 litre in a Cayman S power and torque wise. The Cayman had more revs and power up high, but very similar feel torque wise.

What is not to like? Maybe the character riddled throbbing engine?

And if you roll for a Revo tune with intercooler upgrade, you get 260 hp with about 400nm. With that first gear pull off will be a handful, but this car is not about the stoplight drag, its all about rolling point to point squirt in traffic/tight roads- where it even standard is a blast.

I personally love good engineering and this engine is very good engineering (German and English engineering design input).

Everything you are saying is why I got out of the Mustang, I just couldn't use it around town, that engine isn't built for everyday, great car, not knocking it but the engineering of that engine doesn't come into its own until you are breaking the speed limit, everyone calls me mad but I enjoyed to Ecoboost as a daily a lot more (it didn't have the sound obviously)
