Default The heraldsun is stupid

Too fast to leave, too cheap to buy for MPs
Tanya Giles
17mar05

THREE state MPs are still driving hotted-up sports cars, 16 months after they were banned by Premier Steve Bracks.

The rev-heads do not have to hand over the keys to their cars -- two XR6 Fords and a Camry Sportivo -- until they clock over 60,000km, or three years of driving, and the cars are replaced.

The high-powered cars were bought using a loophole in parliamentary guidelines allowing politicians to buy sports cars, with extras such as mag wheels and spoilers, as they cost no more than the usual luxury cars.

About 30 MPs took advantage of the deal until Mr Bracks put a halt to the scheme in October 2003 after public outrage.

Documents obtained under Freedom of Information by the Herald Sun show most MPs now drive standard luxury cars.

Details of the car of choice for each politician were unavailable because of privacy laws.

Certainly a low point for journalisim when they are refering to a sportivo as 'hotted-up'. :

Yeah, its dangerous to laugh that hard at factory rice and drive at the same time. Might drive into a ditch or another car. Those Sportivo's are a menace.

I'll bet the camry forums (if there are any) have tripled their membership due to the notoriety gained thru this article

That's gotta be the funniest thing I've ever read!

Love to know what a GT is if a Sportivo is a hotted up sports car. I'm betting 'baby killer' will fit into the description somehow though.

You might not think of them as hotted up sports cars , but the insurance compnaies certainly do.For premium perposes you have a sports car , but as far as statistics go yoru are bundled in with the standard cars.

The Hun (tm) is at it again. Surprise surprise. Hardly jounalistic excellence. The amount of ridiculous stories they come up with really had to make you wonder whether they believe the crap they print.

The only thing the Hun (tm) is good for is the endless sport pages at the back (), the carsguide (occassionally) and the TV guide. The rest is pure tripe usually.

Loop holes are fantastic; We got an interim car at work, XR6 Turbo, and I got stuck going for a long delivery run in it...

If they only thought about what they were doing, the only reason that they buy these cars at Government pricing is because they have a better re-sale than an XT, the public are actually paying out more to change them over into a XT rather than another XR.

Bugger the cost! If pollies want to give us all the rhetoric about financial restraint, and lower road speeds, put the lot of the buggers in Kia Rios until they apologise! :
