Default T5 Query

OK, either way this thread probably isn't going to be good for me, but I have to ask the question.

I was sitting in the car today, just stuffing around with it off, when I found out that without the clutch in I can get 3rd, 4th and reverse! Whats up with that?

1st, 2nd and 5th dont go in unless the clutch is in; so alteast half of the gears seem normal. I have no issues with the 'box; just thought it was very weird?

Do all T5's do this?

(/ill start praying that the 'box isn't dying)

Nearly all manuals will do that. Your next test is to see if you can do it while the motor is running. If you match the speed and revs carefully you should be able to change gears without the clutch.

My dad actually said that as well, I thought he was bullshitting on about the old days..lol

Ok, I haven't forced it into 1st, 2nd or 5th; does it mean something is wrong if it wont go.

This thread has already made me feel better...lol

It's pretty simple- the clutch disengages the engine from the gearbox (nothing is wrong with your car!). 3rd 4th and reverse had gear teeth (in the gearbox, of course) that `lined up' when the engine was off, but 1st 2nd and 5th didn't. You could probably force those gears in, but you would be literally turning the engine to get it in (in comparison to just turning the clutch).

I'd probably recommend learning rev-matching (blipping) first with the clutch :P

Cheers

Bliping? If I can be bothered I do that with down shifts, but not up shifts?

Can someone explain to me at what revs you can change the gears without the clutch; just curious. Or is it by hear?

Just experiment, its worth learning. It might get you home one day with a broken clutch/cable.

It also means you need a new gearbox sooner if you keep stuffing it up
Rev matching means smoother shifts, smoother movement- worth the effort with passengers, and heel&toe maneuvers are half a foot away :P

I was able to do both up and downshifts sans clutch in the old EF (Couldn't take off though without starting it in gear). Came in handy when my firewall failed 20 kays from home and I had no clutch.

Wasnt all that fun though!

Just try it and you will see. In 3rd, pull the stick back and push it towards 4th with a bit of pressure. When the revs fall to about 1500 on a normal upshift the stick will just fall in to gear.

You've gotta play around to figure out clutchless driving, I've got upshifts down pretty well, just gotta figure out down shifts and taking off without the clutch.

dry-shifting kills the gearbox until you learn to do it properly. i got the hang of it pretty well in my first car (82 corolla). never did get the hang of taking off without the clutch though...

Prob not the best thing to be doing, best way to learn, so u dont kill the box, is only half clutching when trying to match revs, then gradually use less clutch. But it does end up killing the syncros as there trying to match the gear speeds inside the box but carnt as the inpmut shaft is still under driven load. You will chew them out fast as ,

Pffft, not my synchros I'm burning out, it's work's car! Gotta love feeling the synchros baulk as you change gear.
