Default High paying jobs..

Yep, i'm being a greedy little child and looking for a higher paying job.. The way I figure it, i've got this year off to save for travelling/start of a house etc so I want to make the most of it.

Just wanting to know some areas that pay well without much experience in that industry needed.. For example i'm applying for a certain factory/company that is just same old factory work, but it's paying $33 and hour for shifts between 12am-6am. I've also got a mate working for triple A in Bayswater who drives a mini forklift around and gets between $22-40 bucks an hour and takes home around a grand a week.

I'm willing to work hard for the money, do night shifts etc as long as the pay is good. I was thinking about going up to a mine or oil rig but with band commitments in melb, i'd rather stay in the area (and make use of probably my last year at home, ie cheap board).

I'm currently earning crapola.. Working 6 days a week (thursdays off) from 8am-4.30/5 and usually take home around $400. It's fun working there (with friends) but i'm moving on soon and would like to be getting somewhere close to a grand or more. I'm looking into working with a mates boss (he's on apprenticeship) and that's around $700 a week, 5 days, pulling cables for home/industrial entertainment systems. So i figure there's probably even better oportunities than that out there.

So yep, any leads? Not really trying to be greedy, but trying to work smarter and not harder for my year off.

PS. It's in eastern/south eastern suburbs of Melbourne (Lilydale)

Cheers.

I went to uni for 5 years and I take home a grand a week. I bet I work a lot less hours than the forklift driver, and I get 10 weeks a year paid holidays

That's cool.. But I don't think I'll fit 5 years of uni in, then pay off fees and work up enough money seeing i'd be out of the house before I go to travel and paying bills ;)

You should've skipped uni and started in the chemical industry...

12hr shifts
work 12 days in 30
5 weeks leave which when spread over the roster equates to 70 days off
$90k

What do you do in the chemical industry? I am looking for a change and have a degree in Applied Science (Environmental Tech) with a major in ......... Chemistry. I am not keen on 12 hour shifts, sounds boring.

I'm with Blue freak on this one, I am in the chemical Industry. I work 4 days on, 4 days off. 2 x 12 hour day shifts then 2 x 12 hour night shifts. 7 weeks leave a year and with O/T gross about $2080 per week. Allthough the more you earn the more you spend.

No qualification needed. I was ex military (Bomb disposal). They are keen on people who are likley to hang around. Married, in debt etc etc. The last time they advertised for process technicians, there were a lot of applicants. But they are looking every couple of months for new blood.

same boat here.
just walked into my new job as chemicals/pharmachutical manufacturer.
still training so im doing 8 hour days, 5 days a week and im on $53000pa, thats without O/T included.
once training is complete its onto the 4x12hr shifts with a shift allowance of 49% EXTRA on top of my normal pay.
and for all those "you need to go to Uni to earn more money" people.....think again.
ive NEVER had a job that pays less than $25 an hour and i didnt even finish year 12.

Im doing the same thing, u might look for jobs with little/no experience with good money, but at the end of the day experience/qualifications get the good cash!!!
People should realise investing in education pays off!! U can't work in a factory for a few years and expect to earn over $700 a week if u look for a new job! Im not saying it doesn't happen, but if u work hard at uni/tafe for a qualification u atleast start on a decent wage and work your way up!
Im in my 5th year of post-graduate education cos I know it will payoff for me!
People need to stop resorting to second best and push themselves to do what they have to, to be in the industry they want to be!!!

I'm in a similar boat. Went to uni for 3 years, plus another year or so of study, take home just under a grand a week and get 12 weeks paid holidays per year.

But to be fair, it's taken me 10 years to work up to that pay scale. When I started I was taking home 888 per fortnight! LOL!

If you haven't guessed, I'm a teacher.

The best bit though, is when my kids get to school, I'll have every holiday off that they do. Whilst I know I could have trained for a job that earns more, having that family time is priceless.

In any case, all the best with your proposed career change.

Do a quick Bricklaying course and then join a gang on the building sites, wait for the next building boom and watch the money start flowing right in.

Some of those guys have been earning big bucks over the last couple of years I hear, the new Blue Collar Millionaires.

If you change your mind about getting away from home send me a PM as I might be able to set you up something on on a rig, depending on what sort of work you want.

Mining, try www.pybar.com.au they are an underground contracting company who often advertise over here in the west despite most of their contracts being in the east. So far as you band commitments go, you are going away in a year so they are going to have to get used to not having you sooner or later.

Pybar... :baby bott

I work in the underground mining industry (Mining Engineer) and yes there are big dollars to be made. I've driven trucks, shotfiring/blasting, loader operating, production and development drilling, shift bossing... but you have to be preparred to work for it or find something else to do! It all sounds rosey AND I wouldn't give up my carrer for quids but nothing is for nothing, again a relentless industry.

FYI our operation works 4 on 4 off alternated blocks of days and nights (6 till 6). There are lots of employers out there just decide if you want to work for an owner miner or contractor, I know which one I would prefer!

It took me over 20 years of working to get into a 6 figure salary. No degree just plain hard work and good planning.

Yep. I have always been told by my part time work boss of 9 years that the secret to success is hard work, thats why it remains a secret. He started with one truck when i started with him and know he has 6 trucks. Pays about 5 drivers 70grand a year and pays himself upwards of 120grand as far as i know. He has worked 70+ hour weeks for the last 9years though but know sits back.

I've read some of the posts in this thread. Interesting how popular mining is. With all the recommendations to go into mining (for the "labor" oriented people) are there that many jobs in the field being offered?

I am a Toolmaker with 10 years experience. I don't just machine things though. Besides being able to machine things on milling machines, lathes, surface grinders, and all the usual stuff I also design things and engineer them. This could be designing a hand tool to alleviate ergonomic concerns, re-engineering a machine component for longer wear, stronger shock resistance, or ease of removing and replacing for maintenance, designing a fixture for assembly processes, or an aperatus or other "tooling". I draw them in CAD in both 3-D and 2-D. I use a CAM program (Computer Aided Machining) that writes out the long list of code to run a CNC machine. I can also edit that code manually. Then I set up and run the CNC after programing it. I also do the problem solving that is the catalyst for all this work. I also do reverse-engineering.

Besides all that I can also weld with stick arc (SMAW), TIG (GTAW), and MIG (GMAW) in all positions. I can weld aluminium and stainless steel as well as chromiuim and others. I can use an oxy-acetylene torch to weld, braze, silver solder, or cut. I've also welded cast iron with this torch. I've done carbon arc cutting. I've been welding sporatically since I was 15. I'm 42 now.

In my Apprenticeship for Toolmaker I also had classes in Metallurgy, both ferrous and non-ferrous, Trigonometry, Physics, Drafting, and Geometry to name a few.

However, though I have certification with the State of Ohio and the U.S. Department of Labor as a Toolmaker, I do not have a college degree.

My question is, if I were to move to Australia would I be able to find work and would it pay well?

Thanks,
Steve
