Ok, so cars are cool and stuff, but this is awesome.. in the grandest sense of the word.
Dubbed The Eye of God, this photo is compiled from images, from the Hubble Space Telescope and the Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona, of the Helix Nebula. I find it incredible, hence it becoming an avatar for me, heh! Enjoy it! Here is the link to the site page: http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap030510.html Tim! |

Yes certainly quite a striking Nebula. I remember a workmate of mine was showing me pics of it when he was undertaking his Master of Astronomy, just shortly after this particular photo was taken.

I'd like to know how you got an avatar bigger than 120px? Or can you have 150px now?

i have a bit of an interest in space and often find myself in awe of images such as the one you have posted above. i have always found this comparitive diagram pretty 'daunting', as virgo a is bloody massive! :
here are some other striking space-snaps; this one's an hourglass nebula: this one is really interesting, as due to the speed of light etc, hubble is able to see through time: and heres one of the known universe; definitely life out there somewhere: i've got a few more which are particularly interesting, but google & nasa will basically give you everything you want |

This one looks as much like an eye as the first one. Perhaps Yoda from star wars is stuck in there.

Wow those pictures are absolutely breath taking!
Makes you realise just how small we are in the grand scheme of things.

Truly breathtaking.
I can now understand why people can spend hours looking through telescopes (apart from spying on the cute girl next door. lol) ;) |

Many astrological photos and charts are artificially coloured according to heat bands.
The colours in the photo would be enhanced for effect, hence the "fake" looking image. The real deal woulkd be less saturated and most likely less coloured if at all due to the lack of atmosphere which breaks the light ( aka spectrum ). Any expert care to comment to help us out ???????

I have many hundreds of these images. I use them as references when doing animations or compositing involving space scenes....these two are my favorites.
Cheers.

Space and Sci Fi is my other passion as well.
This true colour pic is taken from the Cassini spacecraft currently orbiting around Saturn last week. |
