Default How to stop squeaky brakes?

Hey all.

I recently replaced my front brakes with Bendix pads the other day, and they are starting to squeak a fair bit. I've purchased this "De-Squeak" stuff but it never works. Anything I can possibly do to stop the squeaking?

I have really hard pads in my car when they start to squeak one really hard stop usually sorts them out for a while. Hard pads when used in gentle braking sort of glaze the disc one hard stop removes the glazing and the squeak.

I have Bendix in my car and they have never squeaked. Some cars have thin anti rattle plates installed with the pads but owners do not reinstall them with new pads. =squeaking. Get the discs skimmed, that usually stops it.

Might not be the pads, sometimes its the anti-rattle clips and self centre-ing pins. Never-seize or CopperKote them when re-assembling. Bush mechanics used to trace an outline of the pads onto a cereal box, and cut and paste it on the back of the pads. LMAO. Could be the discs need machining, they warp a little with heat, and as they rotate, they make the pad 'squeak' back and forth, in the calipers.

Imperative on the outer contact surfaces when replacing pads to prevent squeaking.

If that's the little tin shim things. I installed the new ones.

Accelerate to 100 and then on the picks hard. Repeat a couple of times.

Sometimes works to get rid of possible glazing.

did you bed the brakes in correctly?

generally they only squeal when not bedded in right.

How we treat brake squeal at my work;

Remove pads completely, and chamfer the edges of the friction pad itself on all pads.
With a very rough grit emery paper, scuff the rotor in a cross hatching pattern all the way around, on both sides of the rotor.
Then apply your de-squeak to the scuffed rotor.

Works everytime.

Cheers

Which Bendix pads are they? I though the GCT ones were ok in a BA... The Ultra Premium Ceremic ones are way too hard for my liking, takes plenty of heat for them to come good and they do glaze up and squeal if you're not careful. Haven't tried the general performance ones.

You need to bed them in properly.

Are you discs okay??

Its often the movement of pads on your calipers piston..
A stainless steel plate between the two often fixes..
A light coating of never cease, graphite grease helps..
Don't apply to rotors or pads though..
Often a slight run out of rotor ??

Went out the road today, went to 100km, jammed my brakes on went to 20km and done that 8 more times. Come to a complete stop the next and the cabin filled with smoke nearly, rotors were red.

The squeak is gone though :P just hope my pads are still ok, they feel it.

may have gone a bit to zealous, but it should do the job.

I seem to remember reading in the link saying not to stop, otherwise you may warp the rotors. Hopefully they will be still ok.

The best way to deglaze pads is to remove them and rub them in a figure 8 pattern on a bit of rough concrete, got told this years ago by a brake fitter and have done it ever since(make sure the concrete isnt too rough so it tears the pads to bits, just rough enough to take the glaze off)
Make sure there are no tiny rocks stuck to the pads before refitting.

Thats a stupid thing to do in my opinion, only going to do more harm than good. Such as warping the rotors from too much heat, causing brake shudder. Once the brakes have been over heating, often brake fade occurs.

8 hard stops just to be sure... usually one does the trick, just gets rid of the glazing on the disc, a combination of hard friction material and girlie braking causes this problem happens with hard pads all the time. Happy the technique worked for you.

Damn I was hoping you were going to pull them all apart and spend your saturday in the shed covered in brake dust and shyte.............

I'll try that sooner or later. They are squeaking at very very low speeds, If I'm doing about 5km, then they will squeak, any faster and nothing so I'm happy with that for now.

I used to use CRC Disc Brake Quiet:

But am now using some Bendix stuff with the Brembo setup that I now have. Either one will do.

If you are pulling brakes apart, it is also a suitable time to make sure that all the contact surfaces are clean.
