I've been driving my Au auto like a manual recently (changing the whole 3 gears and d) and was wondering what effect it has on my car in day to day driving (for example fuel economoy, transmission wear etc)?
Also would you drive quicker or slower doing this?

if your gearbox isnt well looked after chances are it will wear it out a bit quicker. make sure you dont hold high revs in low gears too long too.

I've done this on spirited runs before. Used to do it with my EB XR8 and Subaru Liberty and it has had no real detrimental effect that I know of. But really, unless your revving your car a bit higher in each gear than normal, there isnt much point other than having some fun and having a bit more control when down shifting.
What is fun when you do this I have found is, when you have a shift kit fitted. Makes 2nd gear chirpy's when giving it a bit off the lights amusing. (this never happened in the subaru) Your economy wouldnt improve, it would be worse unless you copied the same gear change rpm as it would normally be in D, and then again, whats the point? Just make sure your trans services are regular and you maintain it well and I dont thnk you wil have a problem. Dont quote me on this though. Each gearbox will have its share of problems. Thats my 2c worth
