again the same stuff...for 13k you get a brand new car with 3 yrs warranty (Barina)...still not a bad deal...is it as sharp as the fiesta? probably not. Hell its prob not even as good as the Getz (Which won small car of the year and its a....good gawd...hyundai!) but for 13k its a bargain. And they are selling quite well. The Viva i dont know too much about and for its price i wouldnt pay it. I am a big fan of the current model Astra, they are everywhere on the roads and for a small car look the goods - pricey lil buggas though.

My Viva could become available for the right price, much less than the other kind of Viva. :

Unlike the new one, mine has a Euro (OK, Brit) heritage, some racing credentials (see the sig :eclipsee_ ) and an Australian birth certificate (actually made in Dandenong)!

We have just sat back and waited for holden to make a mistake it was on the cards for years. We were patient. Now we have the upper hand it will be a long time before they catch us again if ever!

Daweoo went broke selling dud cars. Now Holden is trying to flog the same cars. Here are pictures comparing the Daewoo Kalos/Holden Barina and Daewoo Lacetti/Holden Viva:

Pictures

Here is what the press thinks of these cars:

Daewoo Barina

Daewoo Viva

So why is Dennis Mooney having a sook? The press is telling it as it is.

Of course reviewers should point out where it is manufactured, especially if it is replacing a model ie Barina. A reviewer pointed out they were annoyed that the new Barina is a step backwards compared to the old one. The Focus has had it's Sth African build location mentioned I'm sure. Even though some Jap and Euro car makers manufacture in cheap labour countries, they build Jap designed cars. The Daewoos however, are lagging behind because the dynamics are average, which is why they are sold cheaper with lots of extras. The Koreans to this point seem to be playing catch up still. There will come a day where they hold their own against other new cars, but it's not quite here yet. Quality is getting better, dynamics appear to be about a generation behind the benchmark cars.

Yep - it's aboput the same situation the Japanese manufacturers were in during the 60s. Lots of copying, but not much quality. Now look - the tables are well and truly turned! Holden will bounce back - they haven't been Australia's no1 car company for nothing, and if Ford gets complacent, they will just end up worse off than they were 7 to 3 years ago (need I say it - "AU").

It's interesting that this is only coming out now, local content in holdens has been down for years.I always get a laugh when I take a genuine GM (holden) part out of a box that has made in korea written on it (for commodores) or made in taiwan (lots of rodeo barina etc).

"Earlier this year, he played down the results of a JD Power and Associates quality survey in the United States that ranked in last place a Suzuki-branded version of the Daewoo-sourced Viva."

Good to see once a daewoo, always a daewoo.

Well, if the new commy looks like an "enlarged" Astra, then Holden should better worry. No wonder Holden campers are heading to our path in packs!

That Viva and the Daewoo one is like looking in the mirror but with swapped badges. They both are butt ugly :P

I used to have this argument back in the 80's with my Holden mates who always crapped on about it being the aussie car. My old man's XF at the time had more aussie parts than the VL by far (remember the Nissan motor) yet Holden had the veracity to come out with the advertisement "Football, meat pies, kangaroos and Holden cars".

And the suckers ate it up as true..??

Ummm, the Football, meat pies, kangaroos and Holden cars slogan was used in the 1970's when Holden were selling Kingswoods, not during the VL days as far as I can remember.

They did it again in the late 80's...when Ford had 'Have you driven a Ford lately'...

Does this mean now that in europe they will get european barina's and viva's and we get stuck with the korean stuff? Or will the whole world have to put up with these daewoo's?

That new barina is as ugly as sin..

There isn't a lot in the small car market that looks good these days...

the new barina/viva looks worse than most 10 year old small cars in my opinion. Even th proton satria looks good along side these things...

Um.

Holden means a great deal to Korea?

You know, the funny coincidence is; since I really started pushing this slogan at the motor show, in ford circles, and with a few journo mates; Holden have stopped that ad.

I'd laugh my head off if my little observation had something to do with it.

Yeah it was funny at first but you've done it to death to the point where it's starting to sound really lame. Get over it already. _

On another note, I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned that the engines and various components of the Barina/Viva are made right here in Melbourne. So theoretically they have the most local content of any small car sold in Australia.

No, I haven't done it since October so get over to LS1 and complain there.

I dearly wish I could buy a Tshirt with that slogan on it. Just a plain Tshirt like the "Worlds best Streetfighter" ones Toyota have.

That would be reaaal nice.

Good news....The VE article pretty much confirms that VE Wagon, Ute, Crewman and maybe even Monaro will go ahead.
Just goes to show what a load of sh1t some of those rumors were which were circulating a few months ago.

I'm very excited about the VE, it sounds like it's going to be a ripper.
