Default New Toyota Rukus

Just read a review on the new Toyota Rukus and I first thought it looked stupid, but the more i look at it the more it grows on me. I'm going to a dealer on the weekend to see how they drive, but it starts at $27k!

Thoughts?

Its a box with an engine in it. Looks like a dodge nitro a little bit.

when i first looked at it i thought it was a Jeep, didn't expect it to be a Toyota... but then again it really isn't, its a re-badged Scion xB for the Australian market. still don't know what the target market for this is though!

All toyota has done is make another car look more like a Westinghouse than a mode of transport.
Something like that couldn't start a rukus if it tried....

Looks like a Toyota designer was starved for ideas and pilfered his sons kindergarden painting.
I've seen quite a few of these in the US and believe me, they really are ugly. I'm talking citroen 2CV ugly. The worst part is when people try to 'pimp' these eyesores.

Think of it as advertising to the world; "I'm a total knob because I think this car is kooky..... Then again I also think that playing frog in the nude with the lads is good entertainment".

I'd rather a Kia Soul, at least it makes box like transport look good (and you don't have to pay 27k for it either)

Local import yard has a bunch of Nissan Cubes in stock. Always found SUV's/CUV design might give the implication of space but are rather compromised by lack of leg room and head room. For 27k even from a Toyota dealer you could just about drive away in either a RAV4 or Camry.

It's a Scion xB, one of those cars that polarises opinions wherever they go. You either love 'em or hate 'em. Personally, I like boxy cars like this and the Kia Soul purely because they're unconventional and there's nothing else like them on the road.

it's as inspiring as its big brother ...the toyota 1 ton van.
Obviously the same designers who designed that fantastic supercar ... NOT!

I seen one today on the local roads - never even heard of it before.
Didnt look too bad, not something i would personally buy but it was worth looking at.
Might be a bit over priced though at 27k.
Had it been 17k, it would be out of stock already.

I like it, its bigger in the flesh than what you expect. Got a 2.4litre engine which goes someway to justifying the increase in price over a 1.8litre Corolla. I would imagine it would have a lot of room. The auto being only 4 speed is disappointing.

I also think the Nissan Cube looks really good.

The driveline is based on the Camry... so i see it as a boxed up Camry... still looks like a Lego brick thats been chewed on by a dog... and we have 2 in our dealership...

Well they are available here as the Scion XB as has been said, it's like I have seen them around but I don't really notice them. I don't think it really draws that much attention, I think it's quite boring. Blends in with the PT Cruisers, HHRs, and all the other crap. It actually makes a Honda Element look exciting.

Awesome looking little car, but I would personally ditch the Rukus and choose a Nissan Cube.

Same car, pretty much, a couple of years older, and you can get one as an import for 13k.

Link for one for sale for 13 and a half

I can see where Toyota are thinking this is the right car for some little niche market.

However, the set pricing for the Rukus is at the MOST competitive price point for mid size vehicles. Pretty much every other mid size car out there around the 27 to 35k mark typically comes with a myriad of engine and driveline combinations and on top of that, interior options as well.

The Rukus carries almost no ability to compete on that basis alone.

I predict the Rukus will not be kept as part of the lineup after its initial stint here in Australia.

And one more thing. Why the hell would Toyota lump another auto petrol four banger econobox on us, when they could have spent the investment dollars on getting another sports car back in the Australian lineup? (3.5L V6 Corolla Blade for example)
