Exclamation Queensland Police Not Buying Ford or Holdens.

Article in Courier Mail 28/11/09. page 5.
In 2009 Queensland Police bought 3 Chrysler 300C's, 22 VW's. 7 Honda's. 9 Subaru's. 13 Mazda's. 191 Toyota's.
But FORDS 39 down from 86 in 2008.
Holdens 92 down from 131. in 2008.
Good to see our State Government supporting the local car industry !!!

This is all for their "Q-Car" project. The purpose of this is to try and buy cars that don't look like a grey BF on pursuits with 4 aerials.

Vic Police has a few H3s and a new EVO (traffic management unit). I saw them last year coming home from work, the H3s were cruising about in the carpark and the EVO was set up near a breathaliser stop. Who cares what they buy, they should buy the car that best suits their needs.

As there are only 4 Australian built marques that would reduce the "surprise in variety" factor somewhat. Unless they use black duct tape.

I suppose the VWs will be used to book the Toyotas for not keeping left unless overtaking

4 marques? I thought it was only 3? Holden, Ford and Toyota?

And all those aurions they're buying are australian made remember, which makes them just as aussie as holdens and fords

and also remember those aurions will make your na xr6/sv6 look like a slug

2 from Ford, Falcon and Territory, 1 from Holden, Commodore, and one from Toyota, Camelfeatures. I was going to use "models" but I thought I'd attract somebody who'd divide it into utes, wagons etc. Instead I attracted you LOL!

Aurions no quicker then SV6 or XR6.. I think its the slowest now plus its FWD.. They dont like them, but they are cheaper...

Good ol' Capt Bligh at it again I see. They might as well have bought a fleet of RickShaws.

I can't help but wonder if there is going to be a mutiny on the Bounty and we go to an early election. If so I wanna nominate my dog to run against her, I think it may have a good chance of winning.

Buying Australian or at least Aust Made cars should be a federal mandate for all state governments.

All these cars have "Police Packages"? (suspension mods, engine improvements, safety components, high output alternators, performance tires, etc.)

no such thing as a "police package" anymore here, the only difference between show room floor and a police car is the stickers, lights, heavy duty alternator, battery and custom holes in dash.

That's what I figured.

Here in the States there was a big issue with the Crown Vic cop cars not being able to withstand a 70 MPH crash into the rear of the car. Believe it or not this actually caused fires........of course.

There has never been a law requiring a car to withstand the rare, and usually emergency vehicle only, experience of being rear ended at 70 MPH, but idiots on the highway sometimes slam into a stopped Police car while they are looking at the "pretty lights."

Some lawyers smelled blood, and money, and were getting together a class action lawsuit against Ford for building "such an unsafe vehicle", even though there was no regulation or law requiring such a safety feature, and all other safety regulations were either met or exceded. Ford announced it would no longer provide Police vehicles in the interest of safety of the officers, since their vehicle was so "dangerous." As a result, the case was dropped.

Ford didn't drop it though. After being made aware of so many instances of this happening (I believe 7 of them but don't quote me on that) Ford went ahead and engineered a "Fuel Tank Impact Safety Kit", or something to that affect. This would enable the Crown Vic to withstand an impact of 70 MPH and not catch fire. These were made available to be retro-fitted to any existing Police vehicle, and I believe is an option on new cars. It's up to the city buying the car if they want to spend the extra money, I believe.

This is in addition to all the rest of the Police Package that enables the officers to perform their jobs, pursue and catch criminals, and maintain safety of the officers as much as is possible for the conditions.

But there in Australia they just put them in any old car and say "good luck?"

If that happened in the US the Police Union (unable to strike) would make a big case out of this, and would also recieve the backing of the citizens. People were getting mad at Ford because of the previously described fuel tank issue. Otherwise, it is known that Police vehicles are specially prepared to assure additional safety for the officers.

I think the cop engines here only have about 10 - 15 more HP than the regular production engine, but it has other things that help it idle for extended periods and provide more durability. The officer's training enables him to drive better than the criminal he is pursuing.

It would be nice to know they are driving a car that can take the abuse.
