Just recently signed up for a test drive of the model S in Melbourne.
Received this email from the CEO. One less criticism of electric cars me thinks. 8 years warranty by any car maker is damn impressive, particularly in a vehicle of this technological complexity. "Today, Tesla announced that the Model S drive unit warranty has been increased to match that of the battery pack. That means the 85 kWh Model S now has an 8 year, infinite mile warranty on both the battery pack and drive unit. Moreover, the warranty extension will apply retroactively to all 85 kWh Model S vehicles ever produced. No other changes have been made to the warranty. Here's what CEO Elon Musk wrote about the new policy in a post today: Infinite Mile Warranty The Tesla Model S drive unit warranty has been increased to match that of the battery pack. That means the 85 kWh Model S, our most popular model by far, now has an 8 year, infinite mile warranty on both the battery pack and drive unit. There is also no limit on the number of owners during the warranty period. Moreover, the warranty extension will apply retroactively to all Model S vehicles ever produced. |

Kia are toying with a 7 or 8 yr factory warranty. While I don't have the funds for a Tesla if Kia made a cost effective EV with that warranty it would be a serious contender.

Err..that's the rating of the battery pack, not the engine. You might be in for a shock if you look at the performance specs... BMW M5 (dual clutch): 30-90 =6.3 sec, 45-65=1.8 sec @ $104,000 Porsche Panamera GTS: 30-90 =7.6 sec, 45-65=2.3 sec @ $146,000 Tesla Model S85 (std): 30-90 =6.6 sec, 45-65=1.9 sec @ $82,500+/- Tesla Model S P85(performance): 30-90 =6 sec, 45-65=1.7 sec @ $96,000+/- Look at those numbers carefully? Even if it was motor output it would suit 90% of drivers. 7 of the 9 cars I have ever owned were below 85kw and they served me just fine.

I saw Tesla dealer in LA, walked in for a look, salesman was all over me like a rash so I played along getting prices etc. No plans to buy naturally.
He then said something about my accent and I said I was from Australia, he said no problems we have a dealer in Sydney and guaranteed 24hr roadside assistance anywhere in the country. I then said I lived 35 hours by road from Sydney and how does that help me and walked out laughing. Hope you don't need the warranty or you live closer than me. |

You've got to hand it to Elon Musk. He's putting his balls on the line in a manner that no other manufacturer of an electric or petrol vehicle does and 300 kw's and 600 nm's giving 0-100 in 4.4 seconds is very impressive any way you slice and dice it.

Base model is $100,000 and EVERYTHING is an optional extra.
For that sort of money it would have to be extraordinarily special. Whilst those "performance" numbers are impressive, I wonder how far the battery would last if you actually drove like that? It is utterly ridiculous to point at a $100,000 car and exclaim its technological virtues. IF people were prepared to pay that sort of money for their car, AND had been for the past few decades, today's Falcon/ Commode/ Camry would look radically different. It's like people who fork out $50k for a Prius, then exclaim how much better it is than the equivalent $30k Corolla. NB: The 8 year warranty only covers the battery & drive-unit, hardly bumper to bumper. Nor are they very clear on what that warranty actually means. They warranty that the battery will "work" for 8 years, but at what level? If they guarantee it will still hold 92% of its capacity in 8 years, with new for old replacement, then THAT's impressive. It it's 60% with pro rata reimbursement, then not so much.

I guess we have different definitions of plenty. Maybe the Germans should pull out of Australia. So if it's not aimed as a premium product, what market are they aiming for?

On Tesla Australia's website, in the fine print towards the end of the specs, they talk about reduced battery range if you opt for the 21" wheels/tyres vs the 19" package. Why? Does it require more energy to rotate a 21" wheel vs 19"?
