Police in the Philippines are looking to convert their patrol cars to run on a mixture of diesel and used cooking oil from McDonald's, officials and the company said on Tuesday.
With oil prices at crippling highs, the project would convert cars in the Makati financial district of Manila to run on a mix of 40 per cent diesel and 60 per cent cooking oil, police chief Senior Superintendent Gilbert Cruz said. Used cooking oil will be donated by Makati outlets of the hamburger giant, said McDonald's franchising manager Buth Salaya. Other restaurants are also considering donating their used cooking oil as well, Cruz said. One police car has been converted to use the diesel/cooking oil mixture and is already in use, and the government is studying how viable it is to convert more vehicles. "It's a win-win situation for us because we will both benefit," Cruz said. "The cooking oil of their Makati stores will be re-used and the Makati police will use it as a component for their biodiesel and also save money." The head of police forces in the capital Manila, Geary Barias, said that if the project is successful, he may recommend it being adopted by police forces across the Philippines. AFP

Good on em', that's the kind of creative thinking that is needed in this world.
Not retarded carbon trading schemes and taxes that our useless government comes up with. I applaud their effort. |

I don't see there being enough to do it. How much cooking oil could there really be compared to god knows how many cars.

Good afternoon sir.
I am Senior McConstable Plod of the Manilla McTraffic McBranch. Your speed has been checked by McRadar and you were travelling at 106 in a 100 zone. Would you like to upsize that to 116 for and extra $110 and 1 point? |

Bio-diesel is partly made from used cooking oil.. so im struggling to see anything new here? other than McDonalds getting in on the act of supplying the old oil used in the manufacture of biodiesal.

Reminds me of a joke.
A guy driving in his car runs out of petrol in the middle of nowhere. All of a sudden a bee flies down and says "what is the problem".the guys says "I have run out of fuel".the bee says no worries I can fix that".All of a sudden a swarm of bees flies into his petrol tank,a minute later they all fly out again. The bee says "try it now".the guy cranks his engine and it fires up straight away. The guy says"What did you put in my tank".The bee replies "BP" |
