I resigned from a company last year and moved to a better job with their opposition. I kept in e-mail contact with a few people at my old employer and one person inparticular, a nice woman we will call 'Mary'
I asked Mary if she would be interested in knowing about any jobs going over at my new company. She said no…..BUT said that another ex employee she kept in contact with who we will call 'John' , probably would. I remember John from a few years ago and worked in the same area a him for a few weeks. He had since moved to other roles in the industry and now has swag of applicable experience and skills. John contacted me, we had a catch up and I said if something was on offer that I'd let him know. A week later a job came up and I was ASKED if I knew anyone who may be interested, I said I did and forwarded John's contact details. Boss like him and what he has to offer and now he starts in a week or so. Now here is the dilemma - Because the company has hired him I get a 'spotters bonus' for putting his name forward for the role. Its worth a bit over over $1,200 John will find out about this spotter fee, It’s a well known company benfift/bonus thingy So FF do I keep the spotters fee because I was the one who vouched for him and his experience and really had the final say in if I put him forward or not or do I share the spotters fee with Mary? If I do share it how much should I offer? 50% 25% 1/3rd ? |

I'd say it would be nice to mary to offer her a smallish ammount for it, say 10-25%max, cos she did help though the be all and end all is that it was you that vouched for him in your position and its on your head if he turns out rotten (I'm not saying he will). I'd say doing this isn't necessary but would be a nice gesture, towards mary. but if you have a missus be open about a give of that kind of size to another female cos you wouldn't want it to be misconstrued

oooo toughie.
me personally, i'd think about giving 'mary' something, maybe $1-200? wouldn't be giving 50%, in the end she didn't really do too much. getting you in contact with someone isn't doing the brunt of the organising or anything. did her a favour really getting one of her friends a job an all..

Book her and her partner (if she has one) in at a nice restaurant that you've pre-paid, say to the value of $120-$150 as a gesture of thanks...
Palming her cash seems a little cold and calculating?

Keep it - The world of business has no time for feelings
Would "Mary" be considering parting with some money if this scenario was swapped? |

You're the one who did all the leg work, Mary purely just forwarded you on.
If you put in the effort and valuable work time to gain a new employee for your workplace, you and you alone should reap the benefits of doing so.

Keep it.
I don't see how Mary has actually done anything besides tell John that you might be looking for more employees. He was the one that contacted you, not her, and you were the one who took a risk in the eyes of your new bosses by putting his name up. If your bosses had decided he was in idiot instead, how would that have reflected on you? Not something Mary had to worry about.

I wouldn't share anything. Mary's reward is helping a friend find a job. John would be thankful for a job that suits his skills. Both would be oblivious of the role without your interaction. You've just scored some cash to do some sweet mods.

Depends if Mary is a friend of sorts, and you keep in contact with Mary, so she is someone too you at least.
I like Charliewools idea. You keep $1k at least so why be greedy in reference to someone you talk with? Youre not obligated, but it is a nice gesture. |

What you do will say a LOT about your personality and ethics (as has many of the replies).
The mere fact you have asked what to do shows you have at least some moral fibre. Do what you feel is the right thing. |

I think if you are really worried, speak to John and see if he has any ideas and if he is interested in thanking Mary for her recommendation, he has a new job, thanks to you, and you have some cash, thanks to mary, maybe you could both chip in for something nice...

Send Mary a bottle of wine with some flowers saying "Thanks'.
It's just a gesture. The bonus is really only applicable to employees and Mary is not an employee of your company. |

It's a bit of conflict of interest 'Mary' receiving money from a company rival don't you think?
Ethically she shouldn't receive anything, but morally you could take the two/three of you out to dinner or out for drinks with the money.

Thats easy 50% you and 50% "Mary"
Without "Mary" you wouldn't have got any of the spotter fee.... You shouldn't have to give him anything, he got the job because of you... |
