I agree that $1685 a fortnight would be tight for a family of 4 (soon to be 5). I get paid about that, but I have to work 50 hours a week for it!

If he wants more money - go and work for it or STFU.
Really they need to look at their situation before he thought with the wrong head - they were not doing that well financially and then they decide to have another kid. Perhaps if they spent some of the taxpayer's money on birth control it might help.

My story :

The wife works 4 days a week for $608 after tax + family tax benifit from the Gov $48 a week so all up in the hand a fortnight $1312. That's $373 less a fortnight than his family and things are tight. We got one 8 year old to support and pay rent as we cant' afford to buy a house. I have a heart condition that seen me have to give up work in Dec last year but I am retraining to get back into the work force [i get no dole] I have battled this heart condition for 8 years and have allways worked full time in that period.

So we get $186.50 less a week and the wife works and this pair don't work and get $186.50 a week more and just have to support 2 more kids.

Realy that is just wrong.

Not too sick to make babies.

They must be real unfortunate, both too sick to work, I have been working since the day I turned 15 and have never stopped yet, (25 years later).

How about if you are not happy go out and do something about it instead of whine.....paying off a home with my bloody tax money...... :

Spot on, what a dole bludging bugger with a big smile on his face in that news thread !, makes my blood boil too. If he can hump his missus no worries then I recon his back is fine imo.
As far as the children, I'm 36 now and have now kids as I'm only just becoming financialy stable , I'd love to have kids but ....I wouldn't even think of bringing a kid into this world if I couldn't afford it (as has been my situation for a while). Fair enough to those trying and those who need a hand , but ................grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr / i'll end it there before i get banned from this site ! .

Seriously, this rubbish had become over my head with stupidity. It almost seems these days that even if your broke with no cash, nowhere to live, nothing to eat etc etc, then you might as well comit a crime and get caught !/ Then goto jail and get free meals , foxtel , internet, sheeze more than the adverage tax payer has !. This system has lowered itself to rewarding people for being lazy and scumbags / what a joke !.... :

Easy way to fix him. Small lead pellet in the left side of his head should do it.
I have no issue with people who are disabled getting the pension but the ones
like this who have "back injuries" what a cop out. : :
At the end of the day he can sit on his a$$ and still earn a living and not
be detrimental to his "back injury".

What a sook, my back injury put me in a wheelchair 16 years ago. But i still work a full time job 5 days a week. Maybe he should get off his lazy backside & have a go, instead of b*tching & moaning.

I'm sure with $1685 given to this couple for free, surely they can afford some condoms? Perhaps the lazy buggers could cut the lollies, potato chips and pizzas from the shopping list and from their "lazy lifestyle" and put it to better use. I reckon us taxpayers should be charging them a "TFBT ( Taxpayer's Funded Bludger's Tax). And that's for all people of this nature!

And my family of 4 have been living on less than $400 a week for many years. We are not on the dole I do guitar lessons and my wife has a part time job. If I got the amount of cash this guy gets I would be haveing lobster for tea a couple of times a week.

Sorry to hear of your predicament. But unlike the chap in question, you've made do with what you've got, earning what you can.

I take my hat off to you and your family. Unlike this chap who's just itching for more handouts.

Don't know that you can automatically assume he's a bludger. I've just got out of hospital this week and have a severe back problem with my sciatic nerve, I'm layed up for a few weeks unable to move right now and am posting this from bed. I still have a job for the moment (as far as I know), am a very hard worker and very much want to continue working but it's highly possible I just may not be physically able to if my condition doesn't greatly improve. I've been suffering with it now for a couple of years with increasing severity. There's no surgical remedy for my issue and it's not something I can grin and bear (been rushed to hospital by ambulance a couple of times now including this week, I often can't walk or even sit at all). It's highly debilitating and the pain is really hard to live with even on extremely heavy painkillers. My condition is brought on solely from hard work I've done over the past 10 years and I've never been unemployed. I was only married last year and have plans for a future with my wife that we had hoped would include a child. I'm going to be pretty devastated if I can't continue working and if so I hope I wont be viewed as a bludger living off others. I also hope that if I'm not able to work that doesn't also mean I must certainly forget ever having a child to further ad to the decline of my life at the ripe old age of 30. My situation would be different in that my wife is working and able to continue work so my benefits would be far less but looking into it financially even so things will go really downhill for us. With her income in the equation our income with assistance will probably be something around what this guy is getting and we don't own a house. Our rent is a lot more then $225 a fortnight (more then that a week) and we don't have the option of living in woop woop due to my wife's employment.

There's also expenses that come with my issue that will eat our money, some things are subsidized but some aren't. I need ongoing physio 2-3 times a week and without private health insurance that's $65 a visit. The wait to see a back specialist in the public health system at the moment is also 3 years, it's something that simply can't wait that long so the need is there to pay to go private at about $200 a go and the visits are crucial to basic quality of life. I'm also on 6 different painkillers that are only subsidized about 65% under full disability. There's also quite a few other things that impact me financially that I won't even bother going in to. Hopefully for me things look up and there wont be a need to go onto disability but if I do I definitely wont be living the high life and it will have nothing to do with laziness.

This guys situation might seem ridiculous and greedy on the surface but the article has an agenda and doesn't cover every detail of his life. Considering his mortgage payment is so low etc. he may in fact truly be greedy but the issue he's bringing attention to is probably a pretty relevant one for many others. I don't think you can throw disability payments and normal unemployment payments all into the same basket and make a black and white judgment. They're two very different things.

fit enough to get on the job and shoot off some swimmers but can't do a few hours work to support your family... what a great outlook on life the kids will have. Fantastic parenting. Welcome to the new generation of bludgers, asif the kids are going to work when mum and dad sat around there whole lives and were able to bequeath them a house.

"Mr Dearnley, 44, began receiving a disability support pension in 1999 after his back was injured in an assault and his knee hurt in a car crash."

Assaulted because he was a smug dole bludging no hoper talking smack with his hand out no doubt. Injured his back because he turned to run as fast as Carl Lewis when he was going to get a whupping. The car crash was the perpetrator of the assault trying to finish the job.

"We’ll get the $5000 baby bonus, but that’s paid over 13 weeks and not in one sum, which makes it difficult. Then, when the baby is born, we’ll only get and extra $85 a fortnight, which won’t be enough to look after it,” he said.

And there you have it.

1685 per fortnight is $43,810 per year. Hard to say without all the details, but I know lot's of pple living in Sydney, which would be more expensive than the country I would imagine, for less than that.
Do you pay tax on Centerlink payments? If not that would be $43k/yr salary after tax or close to $70k gross,
even if you have to pay tax on it, there still are a lot of pple that get less than that as a salary.

"Prior to his injuries he worked in hospitality and retail."

Sounds like he has no ambition to earn a living given the above too.

Hope his back gets worse, however I better be careful what I wish for, he could use that as another excuse to siphon more money out from under us.

I used to personally know people like this. They made me so sick and angry I chose to no longer associate with the vermin. If you know how to play the system you can 'earn' BIG money. Get a sympathetic doctor on your side and it becomes sooo much easier.

If they were getting 1 grand a week, they would then want 1200, as they would say the grand wasn't enough.

I hate welfare in this country in it's current form. It sickens me to know that this person can obviously rort the system and I'm paying for it.

Bu115hit they can't work. Get a job at a call centre, hell even the Aldi worker at the till sits down for $18 an hour... I would love to know why they CANNOT do this?? Because they CHOOSE not to. Because we pay them to be the whingy, lazy, parasites that they are.

And.. he has a grin from ear to ear for the camera.. what a joke. Him for doing it, and the system for allowing it to happen....

i dont believe that story. sorry there are homeless families living with relatives , who are healthy working class just in temporary unemployment . ' i simply think this is a media beatup . i would feel foolish if i openely believed that rubbish. i'd much rather look at the rorts of the corperate , amnagement, and political facts.

:

$1,600+ a fortnight, for lazing around doing nothing... factor in the concessions that he'd get - gas, electricity, water, council rates, public transport, medications, etc., and this lazy mofo is earning more than I am.

It's not enough? The heart bleeds.

Australia - one big ATM :

As with gz1, do these people pay tax on payments?

My mum asked for a little assistance when she separated from my father and they told her that she earned too much, yet they hand it out like it grows on trees to bong heads who haven't paid a cent of tax in their life most likely :
