A long-forecast slowdown in new motor vehicle sales in Australia appears to have finally arrived, after deliveries decline for the first time in June 2024 after 14 months of consecutive growth, the longest streak in 20 years. June has historically been the biggest month of the year for new-car sales – ahead of the end of the financial year – and it was no different in 2024, recording 119,659 deliveries. However, sales were down 4.2 per cent on the same month last year – and down 8.9 per cent on the all-time June record, set in 2017 with 134,171 deliveries – in a month that saw the Ford Ranger remain the top-selling new vehicle. Since the start of this year, 632,412 new vehicles have been reported as sold – a new record – according to the data, which is collated by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI). While it is up 8.7 per cent on the first half of last year – and 4.4 per cent on the previous best set in 2018 – the year-to-date tally was up 12.2 per cent at the end of May. The Ford Ranger remained the top-selling new vehicle last month, a title it has held for 12 of the past 18 months after claiming the Toyota HiLux's seven-year annual sales crown last year. The HiLux ended June in second place, ahead of the Toyota RAV4 family SUV, which settled to its usual third-place spot on 3907 sales after topping the charts in April for the third time in its history. The Tesla Model Y was the only electric vehicle to finish in the Top 10 last month – recording 2906 deliveries for a fifth-placed result – though it is down a significant 48 per cent on its June 2023 tally, when Tesla set a sales record. Electric vehicles accounted for 8.0 per cent of new vehicles reported as sold last month, down from 8.8 per cent the same month last year, according to FCAI data – a decline of 13.2 per cent in sales volume, in a market down 4.2 per cent. Toyota remained the most popular new-vehicle brand last month, with 20,903 vehicles – a dip of 0.2 per cent compared to the same month last year, although it is still up 31.5 per cent year-to-date.

Ford at #2.
Image where they could be if they put as much enthusiasm and effort into developing some other models as they did to Ranger.

Mates looking at a new car at the moment but doesn't want diesel, I mentioned the VW Amarok but the Ecoboost version
Flat out refusing to even look at it because VAG, then laments no unleaded Ranger. Even though they are the same vehicle, he refuses to buy anything VW. What is there on the new car market that's turbo unleaded sub $80K in an SUV or ute? Requirement is no hybrid as well they're ditching a hybrid Volvo because hybrid is WOFTAM for country driving and they don't want to risk another hybrid tax. |

good list there. Noted the Hyundais as well. Be still my beating heart. Was recently in a CX5 and not a patch on the Terry, even when it's brand new. The fwd feel was very quickly obvious.

If I was in the market for a dc ute and had the $ for this price set...
I would go the 2.3 petrol simply because I dont want a diesel entering and exiting my garage enclosed and attached to my town house with diesel fumes hanging about entering the house. Also the cleaner fill at the pump no stinking diesel all over the hands ..unless you wear gloves. Any experts here able to explain which is the least polluting ...3.0 d or 2.3 t? |

The top of the line VW is equivalent to a Ranger Platinum though which is near $90k.
If anything it maybe more fancy with its 21" wheels which the Ford doesn't get.

Are VW Amarok servicing costs similar to Rangers?
If I could build my own ute, it would be the Ranger Platinum spec with V6 EcoBoost and as a fall back the V6 diesel, but with rear coils from the Raptor at overall normal Ranger ride height. |
