Removing air bag

Hi All,
just trying to remove the air bag from the steering wheel and seem to be having trouble removing the two bolts. I am using a torx socket but there is a pin in the centre of the torx recess and won't let it fit in. Is there a special tool to remove these or have I had too many Bundy's!
Any advice would be greatfull!!

Airbag screws are 5-sided. Are you using a 6-sided key?

A slotted screwdriver might get you by. JC, uses a dremmel to make his.

I think it's a T50 torx bit, but you have to get a tamper proof one with the hole in it - they are about $10 each from Repco.

It's not a normal torx bit, or even a normal tamper proof torx bit. They are all 6 pointed. What you need is a 5 pointed T30 tamper proof torx bit. Ask for a T-30IPR and you will get what you need.

From where smally? Repco don't have them.

Pretty sure we got our last one from Repco, but that was before they turned into 'Ricer Parts' selling NOs seat covers and Neons!
Try Motor Traders (Coventry's in some states)

Thanks for the info, smally351 you are correct that it is a 5 pointed bolt and all I have are 6 pointed torx. Will try Repco or Coventry tomorrow.

Well went on the hunt for the 5 point tamper proof Torx today. Tried Repco,Coventry,Glenfords and Jaycar and had no luck at all!
So rang up Metro Ford (Bris) and was told they have them in a set of 7 from Ts10 - Ts40 with 1/4" drive bit holder. Success at last!!!
Got home and tried on air bag bolts. Worked no problems. Cost around $28 for the set(cheaper to buy in a set than seperately) but youv'e got to have them to do the job.

$28 is good. I saw the same set at a tool joint for $40!

Just finished working on the steering wheel/air bag with no problems.

Just did one thing different to thread for removing wheel, used pulley removing tool (didn't want to knock myself Stupid with the wheel) :eclipsee_

Yes it does look better than the original and the red gives a bit of colour to the dash area now.Got it off ebay at a reasonable price and there seems to be a few around lately.

In the pic, it looks like the colour of the airbag doesn't match, but in person, it's very close - much closer than the airbag against the standard wheel.

Nice touch man. I was goin to put a woodgrain 1 on the ghia but decided to replace it with a new red and black momo the same as it came out with.

Mine looks out of place at the moment, but will look better once I put the wood gear surround, headlight switch surround, door trims etc in. It took me over a year to do the wheel, so I don't wanna rush anything!
