Know your hoon laws!

Hey guys,

Carrying on from DJMaker's thread regarding getting done by the new hoon laws, I'd like to recommend that everyone have a read of all the rules and regulations surrounding the new laws.

I have read through the whole lot top to bottom at work, and if (read: when) I get caught at least I'll know what I'm up for. What I've found by reading this though, is that you're not just up for losing your car for a minimum of 48 hours, you're up for a bucket load of fines and other associated costs, along with the stuff-around.

You'll be up for..

- The fine for whatever you were doing, at least $170
- Impound fees ranging from around $270-$650
- A fine for driving an unRW vehicle (lets face it, if the offence is serious enough to warrant your car being impounded, they'll probably give your car a decent roadside RW list) - That's around $170
- Towing fee - You'll most likely get caught on a weekend. Weekend towing isn't cheap, and the government isn't paying for your tow to the impound yard. This will cost you $100 at the least.
- RW inspection $55-$95

On top of that, if Police have reason to believe your car has been involved in a "hooning" related offence, they have can apply to have a warrant issued to come to your house and search or impound your car.

Needless to say, the EA hasn't been out of the garage since last Friday.

BTW, I won't be doing any burnouts/sideways action on the roads anymore. I never speed, ever. I used to like the occasional dori around a corner or two on a wet day, but I just can't afford to risk it now.

I'll believe it when I see it!

Also if you were obviuosly speeding, don't say you weren't. The copper will know you are talking BS and will the find reason to defect you and get you for hooning.

don't forget, don't admit anything wrong doing; if the cop asks you how fast you were going tell the officer you were doing the legal limit... probably half the reason people actually get a fine if the officer(s) don't have evidence... :P (although their words against yours... they can lie ...)

and a cop can do alot to turn your life around , and if you having a *ocky attitude wouldn't help either

umm sun deep prob not best to say wat u been doin lol and yeh after talkin to the cops one day i heard how they got a guy for hoonin and has had to cough up over $1000+ so yeh not such a good idea when you get that urge keep off the road and kick a pillow or sumthing instead it would b cheaper.

EFfalcon and walkinshaw have a good point im always honest with the cops and dont show them a bit of attitude problem and i think im alot better off by doing so

i've openly admitted to a cop when i was speeding, he had no proof of any speed i was doing but i was honest and got off with a warning.

it could go either way, lie and they have proof and they're likely to treat you worse
be honest and they could do you without proof.
simple point is, don't complain if you get caught speeding.

Good to see one point has been raised.

Attitude.

Being polite, co-operative, honist goes along way. It wont get you off any offences but it can help your day not going from bad to worse.

Very true. When I got pulled over back in 2002 as a young P-plater for doing 115 in a 100 zone, I did my best to be friendly to the policemen. I knew I had stuffed up, I didn't try to deny it, and I didn't try to make any excuses. They were really nice people, even if I didn't particularily enjoy when they gave me the fine. They put me down as 15kms over which meant 1 demerit point and a couple hundred dollar fine. If they wanted to, they could have easily put me down as 16kms over which would have incurred 3 demerit points and a lot more money. (The fines and demerit points have become a lot more severe since 2002). I reckon it was my attitude towards them that saved me from the heavier fine, because I'm sure I was a bit over 115km/h. Since then, I've become a bit of a grandpa driver. I don't speed.

Very interesting read, i can see alot of P Platers getting in trouble, i guess its getting all the ratbags off the roads making it safer for the rest of us.

^^^what ? why would they put you as 16 over if you were 15 over ? speed fines are + or - 3 kmh iirc.

I been done for 98 in 60 zone, 112 in 80 zone 65 in 60 zone, 113 in 100 zone, Fail to have full controll, Burnout/fishtail, hooning, driving unregistered vehicle, driving on suspended license and most recently i have been let off for dui in SA. Look forward to 12 more points and .05 limit in the next month when i get full license.

p.s sunny you are soft, go do burnouts at knox.

I mean they put me down as 15 when I was doing more than that. If I was a bastard to the cops, they could have been harsher and put me as 20 km/h or something like that.

Hey 98 in a 60 zone thats why I don't have a lisence for the moment...
Also because It was double demerits...So insteed of having no lisence for 3 months it was 6months.:(

But i get it back on september 15 woo

Don't know how you guys lose your license. I've held mine for over 12 years. The lowest demerit points have every got was 5 points. When that happened I actually had 12 points till I had a brain fade. That was back when I was 18. That one night taught me to wise up.

I haven't had a fine in quite a long time now. I'm enjoying my license and the 12 demerit points

Ease up guys otherwise you'll learn to enjoy walking. Especially in the nanny state (vic).

I get mine back September 15th too, 6 months and $400 fine... for what...? For my stupidity that took 2 minutes, a burnout (although it's nothing to be proud of, it was pretty big which is better than getting done for something tiny), and then 138 in a 70 zone (in the early hours of the morning).

I was also polite, but then I also got what I deserved and as I have said it's nothing to be proud of, forget the cops, it's embarrassing for you and an inconvenience too. IF you don't do anything stupid, there wouldn't be a reason for you to speak to a police offer in the first place.

yeah .. so thats why i was doing 45kmh in a 50 zone and i still get pulled over ? i did nothing. you dont have to be doing something to get pulled over.

now i have a canary becoz of that..... ur statement means nothing to most P-Platers.

A P-Plater going under the speed limit is even more sus!
the only way to win is to sit on the exact speed limit i guess :S
pretty rough but i imagine this is only the start.
