Default Territory Diesel

Howdy folks,
looking at a territory diesel as a replacement for a Ford Explorer (keepin it in the family!) and Dad had heard through a mate of his that Ford were in the development stages for a diesel donk for the tezza, but that they were finding it tough to keep the damn thing cool, and the project was about to be scrapped. i was just wondering if anyone had heard anything similar or different. appologies if this is a repost

cheers
Rob/.

IMHO i reckon LPG is a better option than diesel. It's much cheaper, govt rebate, we have a lot of it and SVI brings big improvment in power and economy.

Its all fun and games getting a rebate to get GAS, but in a few years time the tax is going to increase and before long you'll be paying as much for LPG as you do petrol, and the fuel consumption is much, MUCH worse.

You'll end up paying the subsidy back over a long enough period, of course you might sell the car before then, but then you'll lose any money gained from the loss in resale value. Lose, loseif you ask me. Especialy since petrol is back to 90c/L. :

Pretty sure the tax on LPG wont be higher than 15%.
Fuel consumption on my EL averages about 12L/100km on petrol and 15L/100 on gas.

There was a change to the Terri motor so you can run it as duel fuel. Ford investigated making a straight gas Terri but couldn't fit the tank in. But there are Terri's on gas running around.

Was planned, didn't happen.

From the talk in the media a diesel Territory would still be at least 2 years away.

If the Terri gets it i would say it is a sure bet that the Falcon will get it too.

I shiver at the thought of a small diesel powering a Falcon - a decent size one (Ie Patrol or Lancrusier) would be ok i guess

Thats a pretty good point actually. As more people spend money on LPG the demand becomes higher and the price increases.

I'd love to know how much LPG has to be before you are still saving money on it. I would imagine, for example, that if LPG was 80cents (off the top of my head) and petrol was 90....petrol would be the cheaper option.

The same conditions exist today with Deisel. John Howard isn't stupid, he just hopes we are. Its not always teh case but diesel engined cars usually cost $3k to $5k more than the petrol sibling, which if you travel average kms a year would take more than 10 years to break even on the better fuel consumption diesel gives you. As for saving money, not in this country!

I'm looking at purchasing a petrol ST-X NAvara for work instread of a diesel, because of the kms I travel (average) the cost savings in running a diesel aren't enough to cover the price premium to purchase it. Hever its a different story for our work crews who drive 60,000km a year, in five years, a diesel will have cost less to run and maintain over 300,000kms than a petrol by far.

I think a diesel territory would be great. Ford would have to come up with a good diesel before i bought one. The stuff that comes out of England is crap. They leak oil and they dont go that good either, compared to other diesels.
If i was Ford, i would be looking at making a deal with a japanese manufacturer of a diesel engine to put in the territory. The japs build reliable engines.
For towing purposes, i wouldnt go past a diesel. They may not have a great kw output, but they have heaps of torque and are very economical. YOOT is right. You do pay more for one initially, maintainence costs are higher than a petrol and you do pay more at the bowser to fill it up, however, the fuel can be excellent.
My parents own a 2004 Mitsubishi Pajero Turbo Diesel. It weights over 2 tonne and gets around town 10lts per 100k, consistantly. Thats better than my Falcon. On the highway it gets around 8lts per 100k. My Falcon struggles to do that, but it can do it.
In my opinion a Territory Fitted with a quality Diesel engine would be a great thing, considering how much it weighs and considering the circumstances of its use.
But each to their own.

Default Diesel Territory is no go

i read recently that ford is not going diesel as they have no appropriate diesel engine worldwide thet would suit and to develop a new engine is too expensive they were more interested in LPG.

There are numerous diesels they are considering. The Jaguar v6 twin turbo, the Land Rover single turbo, Range Rover V8 twin turbo and the American F series turbo diesels just to name a few. The Jag and LR diesels are actually built by Puegot and also used in the 407 Pug.

I though the Territory was an off or soft road vehicle. Have you ever tried to buy LPG in the bush?

Yep they sure did.

There is not a huge problem as long as you drive point to point on Highway 1.

The stress starts when you decide to visit anywhere else or you stay away from cities for a while.

It used to be just as bad for PULP. Last time I went to Darwin via Mt Isa, I ran out of petrol twice. I also had to back track and go the long way a couple of times to make sure I could get PULP on the way.
I knew this would happen so I took a 20 litre jerrycan but it is a bit hard to do that with LPG.

The Land Rover/Jaguar 2.7L TD makes 440Nm, which would be adequate. The new 3.6L V8 TD in the Rangy makes 640Nm which is better
