Default Electro-Hydraulic Power Steering – EHPS – Cooler Install

Just a small write up and a few photos of a cooler installed to a LVII focus with electro-hydraulic power steering. Factory setup does not have a cooler and judging by the temps felt it’s not really required as the fluid never really got warm. However this is a 'filled for life' fluid compartment so i was able to renew and increase the fluid capacity.

Duration: 1 Day

Location: Permanent removal of the driver’s side air dam. Plenty of space inside the front bumper but I did want to cover up any of the radiator/condenser space as a bigger transmission cooler may go in later.

Removal of the items required to install: front bumper, underbody shroud, drivers side wheel and wheel arch. Front bumper most difficult to remove.

Notes:
Small vibration pads were placed with the cooler and against the lines. Corrugated plastic split tubing was also installed on the lines to prevent chafing with surrounding items.

Permatex thread sealant used on the cooler fitting and blue thread locker on the bracket bolts. 1 hole needed drilling and 1 hole required enlargement.

Remove the return line from reservoir, 3/8 hose joiner with extra hose to cooler and then a return line back to the reservoir. All hoses are 3/8 size.

Before starting engine have both front wheels off the ground and turn steering wheel lock to lock numerous times to help flow the fluid through the system. Top off fluid and start car, repeat lock to lock steering, top off and check for leaks.

Power steering fluid: Pentosin CHF 11S

Thanks for the write up. Pretty clean setup there. Lots of room for the cooler too
