Black smoke means excessive fuel.

Check your oxygen sensor. After about 100,000km they die and make the car run really rich.

yep oxy sensor for sure, i had the same problem, i went to the wreckers the other day got a secondhand one $44 buks and it worked, no more puffing carbon on idle and black smoke wen i boot it. My sparkplugs where that dark as well packed with carbon soon as i put the new oxy sensor in the burn was so much cleaner and the spark plugs where clean as a whissle they cleaned themselves bassically. I got the boss 290, been doing similar thing. Idling erratic and running rich have pulled plugs and found they were black but not too bad, but the pipe burn a very heavy coat of black soot. Pulled the plenum off and it was full of oil and the throttle body was filthy. cleaned and placed back to gether and it ran a bit better, maybe an oxy sensor as well. not taken it for a run yet.

How many kays has the car done?

An oxygen sensor is supposed to be good for about 100K or thereabouts IIRC.

50000, about to take it for a run. claened it up and left battery disconnected over night, will see how it goes. The throttle body was dirty and the plenum covered with oil. It seemed to run a little smoother this morning but will see when she is hot as thats when it runs rich and rough.

bottle of carbon cleaner through intake and throttle wont hurt and some injector cleaner while at it after u resolved the problem

yes bot O2 and map sensor can be the most likeliest culprits

I did not think that any potential problem descriminated between engine types but if my post is out of place I apoligise and will see if there is one on black smoke in the boss section.
