Default Auto to manual conversion.

Hi guys. I just got a quote from Mal Wood automotive up here in Queensland on getting my AU3 XR6 converted to a manual. The quote for a reconditioned Tremec T5 box with all the bits and pieces to go with it and fitted was $4670. I was just wondering if you thought this was a reasonable price?

Cheers for any help, Scott.

Its high but thats what comes with all new bits and a reconditioned box. Could probably get parts yourself and fit it (if your competent with mechanical work) for ~$1,500 or so

seems high to me even with a reco box and new clutch for $1800 if you shop around. $300 for all the bits and pieces . and should be no more than $800 to fit it all probably less

Wow does seem a bit high. Haha. Any ideas on where I could look to find the stuff cheaper?

Okey dokey. I had a look on Ebay but not 100% sure of what to look for. Might look at some wreckers over the weekend.

The main question is how mechanicly minded are you ? as you will have to pull half the dash out to fit the pedal setup in etc . I surgest also if you do it your self or eaven get it done for you to have the rear main replaced as it will only cost an extra $20 or so while every thing is out , but a fiew hundred or a big headache for you if it leaks after its all back together.

I'm not to mechanically minded myself. I was goin to maybe get my dads next door neighbor to do it as he is a mechanic and would only ask for a few cartons of beer. What is the rear main?

The main crank shaft seal at back of motor behind drive plate/flywheel ,also there is a welch plug behind there I would replace that also with a brass one to save on a later headache

considering i payed 6 grand for a factory 5 speed with low km's, lsd, good condition etc etc makes me think you would be better off looking for a car that came as a manual from the factory probly wont get an xr6 for that money but i would think no more than 9 for a decent xr6 manual, if you want to keep this current car tho i guess you gotta pay what you gotta pay but i would consider looking for a factory 5 speed

Yeh makes it seem a little bit pointless. I will put up with the auto until I'm on better money and can afford the conversion.

Geez that's alright mate. Do you mind me asking where you got all the stuff for it? Did you have to look for long?

Cheers for your help.

Yeah I think all up mine cost about $1600 to convert. But that was mainly fitted my my mechanic and included a new tailshaft and ecu. Definitely the best bang for buck mod I have ever done. Worth every cent
