Default Which car do you want to drive on the Autobahn?

Ok, hopefully we can have a bit of fun with this.

I'm visiting Europe next year (France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Austria & Switzerland). Most of the journey will be spent on touring style motorcycles but for part of our German tour we've decided to hire an AMG Mercedes Benz (for three days). Hopefully it will be a C63-S but we will decide closer to the date.

It has been a dream of mine ever since I lived there as a kid to drive a Benz rapidly along the unrestricted sections of the Autobahn. It will be surreal to finally fulfill the dream.

My question is: which car would you choose? Why?

Veyron Super Sport,
Why: to experience something that will still push you back in the seat at 300km/h!!!!

I always wanted to do it too, and managed to do it in 2007.
Unfortunately it wasn't with a dream car of any kind, rather an Audi A6 wagon.
It was a turbo diesel of sorts, and actually went quite well for the barge it is.
We mostly cruised on 160-180kph, though on on occasion we ramped it up to an indicated 240kph for about a minute, and then sat on 210kph for about 30 minutes.

It was quite an experience to come back down to 130kph in limited areas and feel slow.

It was also interesting to see quite a few cars come past us at a fair rate of knots when we were sitting on 210kph.

You'll love the autobahns.

To answer you original question though, I'd love to do it in E63 BMW M6.
That N/A 5L 500hp V10 sounds just lovely...

Congrats on your trip- have fun- but be safe.

Me- in dreamsville, a McLaren F1 with 2 brothers/ mates either side of me driving.

Reality- AMG C 63 with 6.2 litre atmo black series.

While over there- why not rub your nose into the ring?

Would like the comfort and power of a Bentley Continental GT3-R.

Have been a passenger in a MK4 Escort XR3i back in the late 80's which from memory topped out at 120mph, and a coach which was more interesting as you can sit back and watch the performance cars blur past you.

Sadly these days there's always a ton of roadworks, and truly unrestricted sections are few and far between. Usually the limit is 130, which is generally what people tend to cruise at anyway.

Having said that, on my recent trip over there, we had a couple of 'top speed runs', and got the 130i MSport we were in to about 246kph (260kph speed limited) before having to back off due to traffic.
It still makes our speed limits here feel very pedestrian though!

I can also highly recommend lapping the Nurburgring, however you will need a dedicated 'Ring rental, or a friend who will lend you their own car, for that.
Part of the standard rental agreement on road cars is that you are not to take it on the Nordschliefe.
They are fitted with GPS, and there are always photographers camped out, waiting for some action, many of whom post their photos online in galleries for purchase, so don't think you won't get found out if you try it.
Bin it, and you will be up you-know-what-creek without insurance.

The 'Ring rental places are easy to find, and have a selection of cars available. There are also companies that will take you out for a passenger lap in a Ferrari or Aston Martin, with experienced drivers.

The Nordschliefe is an awesome track, and epic fun, but you have to respect it.
In just the 2 days I was there, we saw no less than 8 cars towed out after collecting the barrier, or each other (or both), that were completely written off.

It also meant that the track was closed for a fair chunk of time while people and vehicles were recovered. It would re-open for 15 minutes, and then someone else would be off, and they'd have to close it again.

But, back to the question at hand, my choice for cruising the Autobahn, if money was no object and traffic and roadworks weren't an issue:
Aston V12.

We had some pretty long sections from Frankfurt to Nurberg. Was pretty cool, as we were in a bit of a hurry and it really cut down time going whatever speed I wanted.

For Nordsliefe, we went with a race rentals group near the track. The guys that owned the place was awesome. We got the VW Scirocco. They are fully set up in house with semi race tyres, brakes, suspension and a lot of other mods. He also ran Porsches, BMW's and even the smaller cheap cars like Suzuki Swifts. The guy took me for a full speed lap as passenger first and then I got my 4 laps driving. Was one of the best things I have ever done. It's amazing how much you know a track you have never been to just by playing video games. Haha, it finally pays off. Even the missus loved it.

Lucky bugger! I bet you had a blast even if it was in a diesel A6! The fastest I have been on the Autobahn was as a passenger in a 190E Cosworth going about 220km/h through Black Forest... if only I had been old enough to drive at the time

It seems we think along the same lines, that C63 just beckons to me. I'll certainly be safe and only drive to conditions, luckily we are going in summer so it should be all good. I am not brave enough to try the Nurburgring in a rental, just based on how many times I crashed playing Gran Turismo

To be honest, I'm more concerned about crashing my mate's motorbike off the side of a mountain than anything else.

Mercedes-Benz S600 (V222). I like the idea of cruising along at high speed in a whisper quiet leather lined cabin set to exactly the right temperature while getting a back massage, and a twin turbo V12 under the bonnet with more than enough power to overtake.

Congrats and good luck....

If it was me, I don't think it would matter what car it was as I reckon I'd be concentrating that much I wouldn't notice the car.

If I had to pick - Nissan GTR closely followed by a Veyron

Tough choice,

maybe a Mercedes SEC 560
[IMG][/IMG]
MK2 Jaguar 3.8
[IMG][/IMG]

or an Audi Rs6; probably the rs6 saw a few fly past on the Autobahn whilst being in a slow bus, tend to hear them coming before you see them

Nearly Anything...

Got a Focus CMax diesel to 180kmh on the last day of the rental before the vibrations got too scary.

But as said, good luck finding a quiet section.

I would pick an S Class. I had a rental in South Aftica (not me paying) got it to 200, drove like it was still

Thanks to those of you who have said congrats, this is something I've wanted to do for years! I don't leave for Belgium until the end of April so unfortunately I'm still doing some penny-pinching to ensure all my plans work out smoothly.
It will all be worth it when I get there

Autobahns? Trabant of course! Native to them

I remember driving one of the original autobahns to Berlin in the 1980s. It was still very rough from war damage. There were two speed limits - one for cars and one for tanks. The speed limit for tanks was higher!

The roadside was littered with broken down Trabants with families standing mournfully around them waiting for help to arrive.

Nowadays the ones topping 200 are invariably BMW, Audi, Mercedes and Porsche. A word of advice though - if something comes up ahead, stopping from those speeds (indeed anything above 130) is something that can load your pants up! Keep a good eye out ahead and drive defensively.

Oh and another point. I recall vaguely that the liability onus is on the driver above 130. If you cause an accident at high speed there could be an issue with insurance. Check the small print first.

Well, I didn't get to fantasize, but I drove a diesel VW Tiguan because that's all I could find to rent in Frankfurt. (Make your reservation in advance!)

The Autobahn is just a nice motorway. But I did get to drive to the Nürburgring, where I had fun watching a DTM race. Camping there is about as crazy as Bathurst, except that there were a lot more trees.

You'll definitely get a better deal than I did! I had the car for 5 days and it cost me something like $700 USD. I thought I was saving money by camping at the track an extra night, but it would have been much cheaper to have gotten rid of the car and stayed at my hotel in Cologne.
