Default How do I unrego my car and keep the plates?

I want to take my car off the road soon to do some major work to it so I don't think there would be any point in paying rego for those couple of years. My problem is that I want to keep my original number plates, but Vic roads tell me if I cancel my rego I have to hand the number plates in. So I was wondering is there any way of canceling rego for a couple of years while still keeping my original number plates?

Any help appreciated.

Same I did this with the XE I'm building.. (If you call pulling apart and leaving it under a tarp building!! )

They will send letters telling you that if you drive the car unreg you are breaking the law. Bin it.

When the car is finished, get your RWC and re-register it.

Im not sure about Vic, but it NSW if you do that MADXF they require you to buy new plates when you try to re-register it after 3 months or longer.

Bite the bullet and keep it registered. No roadies when you get it running, just drive it.

I'm pretty sure you can suspend your registration of that car. Then when all work has been completed, you need a RWC and a inspection at VicRoads to get it re-registered. You keep your plates on the car while it's off the road. Again, not sure if it's still possible. A friend did this about 6 years ago.

Yeh but 2 years of rego is a waste if there's another way.
Might even be cheaper than a RWC inspection providing it's roadworthy after he does his major work on it.

You can store the plates for a nominal fee usually, so you cash the remaining rego in on the car, store the plates with vic roads, then register the car and have the plates released from storage.

Thanks for all the help guys. Also If I store the plates with Vic roads do I get the same ones that I handed in back or do they make new ones with the same rego? My current plates are the old Vic green writing on white background ones and I want to keep them that way as it makes the car more original. Also would anyone know how much it costs to store plates?

Cheers,
NC_Steve

Good question. There was a problem with some of the green digit plates which had the reflective paint fade and crack. I think originally they only wanted the effected plates replaced with the blue digit ones, and you got a new set of digits, no choice. Now I think VicRoads are ridding all green plates as soon as they come across any, with the blue plates, doubt if you'd be able to keep them green or even the same digits. Think you have a lot of questions to ask next time you are at VicRoads.
