Got the little fez a week ago and i'm still at a loss with what to do when running the engine in. Am i supposed to go gently gently or go hard all the way? I've been getting conflicting advice.
Its traveled about 200ks so far - which consists of just stop start driving, random breaking and flooring (i am STILL the typical sydney driver) but I have to drive it down to melbourne in a weeks time. Would the constant 100km/h speed severely affect the running in of the car? |

I think just drive it normally, no thrashing but also no grandpa-style. When I got my Fiesta... the first few thousand kms I tend to baby it. Then the needle gradually sees 4000rpm, 4500rpm, 6200rpm.

I hear your concern about the long drive as when I pick up my XR4 in a few months I will get it in Brisbane and then have to drive 1000km to Richmond in NSW to get home. Why buy it in Brisbane, cheaper rego in QLD and I want to keep QLD plates on it. I know about the NSW rules but to hell with it...
What I was told was if you are in 5th, for an extended period while running it in, to drop it into 4th or 3rd very quickly and back to 5th so that the car varies the rev range a bit. Anyone with more advice please pipe in as I would also like to know. Cheers Jason

I think all this stuff was handled in an earlier thread, but who cares.
I've owned 2 Fiestas in my time. The first was a WP, now I own a WQ. When I first got the new WP, because I was still kinda learning to drive manual, I drove like a grandma pretty much. But when I got my new WQ, I drove it like it was stolen (thrashed the guts out of it on the advice from my Ford dealer). The result = My WQ is MUCH quicker than what my WP was. |

All this "thrash the guts out of it is crap", the ford dealer gets a cut out of warranty claims ie thru servicing eg if they replace damaged parts etc...
Just drive normally, no need to grandpa too much, but dont redline it either... Any other advice you get to the contrary is rubbish... |

The thrashing it theory has merit. Alot of race car engines are run-in that way. The idea is to run it in using the same manner in which it will be used.
So if you intend to sit on 6000rpm all day and every day... well you get the idea. I wouldn't do it to a street car, but I wouldn't go around saying its nonsense without any understanding of the concepts involved, which seems to be going on here.

The evidence for me was comparing my last Fez with my new one. They are 2 completely different cars.
I've had everything checked by a mechanic, he said everything looks perfect behind the scenes. The only thing I have to go off is my experience. |
