Umm no thanks, what next..? I dont think it would be hard to find a fair way to tax AEV's & EV's within the current tax structure but according to this mob Infrastructure Australia there's not, yeah bollocks lol -
"The government agency says the current system for funding roads is unsustainable because drivers are transitioning to electric cars, which will not pay fuel excise, but the cost of our roads will stay the same or increase." https://au.news.yahoo.com/radical-pl...224317293.html "Overseas, new EV sales currently make up from 5 per cent in California and more than 25 per cent in Norway. (And growing in both cases). In Australia, it’s less than 0.1 per cent (and falling)." https://reneweconomy.com.au/australi...waiting-82878/ cheers, Maka

User pay system is a great idea.
We have a few cars, and only a couple of them do high k's, yet we pay the same rego for all of them, it's crazy and outdated. It's about time the system was reworked.

+1, our 2 cars do virtually no kms. But then who will pay for the road upkeep?

I am very cynical of how much of the actual rego is paid for road upkeep.

to ensure honesty, they'll require you to have a gps data logger, which just happens to capture every time you speed and sends it to the Cash Collection Department.
too cynical?

There's no need to change from fixed registration costs for ICE and hybrid vehicles
as the state governments still get their fixed tax income from registration and their cut of the GST on fuel, federal government still has its 38.5 c/litre fuel excise income. No, just change Road tax on EVs at a cost per kilometre and leave all other vehicles alone. I have a feeling that this proposal will disappear up its own *** once the government realises that take up of EVs will be measured in decades not years... |

If all the fuel excise collected went into road/hwy improvments & maintenance etc the argument may be a little different but -
"Currently money collected from fuel excise does not necessarily go towards improving roads." https://www.news.com.au/finance/econ...8695491138408f cheers, Maka

In rural Victoria you pay less for registration than in the CBD or outer urban, about ($686 vs. $800)...so around 14% less.
...maybe the same weighting would be applied to 'country kilometres'. In my case it's a 30km round-trip to go to the nearest supermarket... I have four cars and one motorbike for three drivers (one rider, me). |

Excise is like a user payes portion of fuel so if the user payes system was to remove fuel excise as well as registration then no one will be disadvantaged.
I think it is a great idea as a owner of two V8 and two six cylinder fully registered vehicles in Qld. Warren

One, if I drive into the city on Citylink (maybe 1-2 times per 3-6 months unless my missus gets sick then it's daily).
Two if I drive to the Mornington Peninsula on Eastlink. ...I don't do the second one very often given I live 80km from the CBD in the exact opposite direction I think we only have the two... I still have eTags though. |

If they make everywhere in Melbourne a 15 minutes tops walk from a train station then fine. As it stands if I want to catch public transport the nearest station to my work is just over an hours walk away.
And as already said, governments will not change to something that brings in less money. |

It's a 30km round trip to the post office 2 or 3 times a week, 50km to the shops, 150km to the local hospital...
User pays is ridiculous unless there's a lot of "free kms" for country people. |

The People living outside of the congested areas will end up paying the majority.
hardly seems fair.

Fuel excise goes to consolidated revenue, without it a lot of government programs
for supporting us in other ways would disappear and a lot more people would be hurt. Mess with one thing and lots of other things get disrupted. |

I have 4 cars. Have no problem paying regos. Its the road tolls that need to go. I pay more tolls than all 4 regos put together.
