Hi,
Can't find anything on forums as yet but can anyone out there please tell me how to find out the details pertaining to the chassis number on a Mk1 cortina. I have just finished restoring a Mk1 Consul Cortina GT. The only number on the shell is 113E six digits M. From the info I can find is that it is a 1963 2door saloon/GT built in November 63. I need to find out all the info as I went to register yesterday and the TMR in Qld couldn't find anywhere in Australia where the vehicle had been registered.Could the shell have been a spare body for racing purposes back in the old Bathurst days? |

A 63 two door GT is indeed a rare car.
I'm not 100% sure but they could have been British built and bought over for motorsport homologation. 113 is the body type, Right hand drive manual. On Australian cars there will be another number on the radiator support panel, passenger side close to where the grill attaches. The stamping is very shallow (on mine at least) and could easily have been covered by primer and paint, erased by a sandblaster or lost if the panel has been replaced. Once again not 100% sure but from the info I have the chassis number on British cars is on the compliance plate labelled as 'Vehicle number' under the paint code. It would start with a B for Britain followed by A for the Dagenham plant If it does have the BA prefix it might be worth searching UK sites or getting in touch with the Mk1 Cortina owners club over there, although it is a worldwide club.

Hi Mate,
I have done a thorough search for the number on the radiator support panel and does not have any visible markings. I cant understand why no record of registration could be found for this vehicle by using the chassis number stamped under the drivers strut. |

You could also try Motorsport Australia (CAMS) if its ever been logbooked they may have details of previous rego numbers.

the number on the strut tower is not the chassis number
it relates to the model/engine as previously stated the chassis number is on the radiator support panel which in turn should match the numbers on the id plate just as a matter of interest does it have strip speedo or 3 dials |

Yep thats right, it matches the one on the ID plate, if its got no visible chassis number they may should be able to use the one on the ID plate.
A pic of mine and the number on the radiator support if its of any help. As I said the stamping is very faint and easily covered by paint or erased with abrasives.

Hi Chappy 60,
It has a strip speedo. and only 5748 miles. There is no other numbers anywhere visible. My chassis number is 113E941291M. There was aplate attached on the drivers muguard at some stage but it was removed before I obtained the shell. |
