Default Scientists writes guide on how to survive a nuclear bomb attack

http://www.perthnow.com.au/technolog...-1226802818314

Quote:
A SCIENTIST has published a guide to help authorities limit deaths from fallout after a city is hit by a nuclear bomb.

Taking cover in existing buildings is widely accepted as a critical first action after a nuclear blast in a major city.

But how long people should stay there before moving to better shelter is a more complex question.

Buildings that are lightweight or lack a basement are more easily penetrated by radioactive dust.

Writing in a British scientific journal, Michael Dillon of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, has now come up with a mathematical model for the "optimal shelter exit time'' to minimise radiation risk.

Based on his calculations, if adequate shelter is 15 minutes away, individuals should remain in their initial, poor-quality shelter no longer than 30 minutes after detonation.

If, however, the better shelter is only five minutes away, individuals should move there immediately and forego the closer but unsafe buildings altogether, he wrote.

Reaching adequate shelter rapidly could save between 10,000 and 100,000 individuals from fatal exposure in the event of a single, low-yield detonation, said the study published in Proceedings of the Royal Society A.

"These methods are intended to assist emergency planning officials in the development of an optimal low-yield nuclear detonation response strategy,'' wrote Mr Dillon.

A low-yield blast is described as 0.1-10 kilotons.

One kiloton (kT) is an explosive force equivalent to that of 1000 tonnes of TNT. The US bomb that killed more than 200,000 people in Hiroshima, Japan, in 1945 was about 15 kT.

More than a fifth of American households lack basements or are considered too lightweight to offer shelter in the fallout phase of the emergency, the study said.
So leave immediately after the blast for a better, closer shelter and get incinerated by the thermal effects of the nuke having gone off

There is an old BBC film from the early 80s about what would actually happen should there be a nuclear war, I wouldn't want to survive the blast.

Yes that's the one, what a bleak and disturbing film that was. I saw it on VHS many years ago and some of the imagery is still burned into my brain.

Well, considering the context, late 1970's/early 1980's Britain, the Soviets had just invaded Afghanistan, Britain was in a period of economic trouble, the Cold War was on like Donkey Kong between the US and the Soviet Union, it gives an insight into the gloom that existed at the time.

First, you need one of these... nice and light for 1 handed opperation:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Baumr...item1e717b12ae

When fossil fuels run out and you need to resort to hand to hand combat this may help:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/M48-Apoca...item19e6834879

On the other hand this may help:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Christian...item2334145885

If they are true zombies you may like to have this as a back up:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Every-Day...item3cda2cf85d

Wearing this:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/This-is-m...item23307293fa

God bless ebay.....

This scenario is pretty much the game "DayZ" on PC.

No nuclear blast but zombie apocalypse and everything is rooted, start on a random spot on the coast with nothing, have to loot houses for weapons/food to survive, while avoiding other players who will most likely smash a shovel through your skull for your tin of baked beans. Its not the zombies who are the problem its the other ******* with the shovel.

If you want to feel society without law/order then play that game and realise how screwed you are if you survived something like a nuclear attack lol.

Old Fallout fan here! Nice work Yellow_Festiva Ive made a paper copy for myself...

On a serious note, i'm sure the members that are old enough would remember some relief when the wall fell, mate i did! I hope this guide is not a forewarning for down the track tbh. Remember humanity is exclusive to all humans, once its gone so are we.

cheers, Maka

The best description was from the Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy...(from memory)...
Barman "I was told we were supposed to lie down in a gutter and pull a paper over our head or something. Will it help"
Ford Prefect "No".
Barman "Last orders please".
