If the battery is dead / alternator not charging...etc then this would render the ECU powerless. If your odometer has disappeared then I'd guess yours is DEAD DEAD!!! RIP
Funny you should post this, I flattened the battery in my AUII today (vacuuming it!), when finished I turned the key...it sputtered through about 4 revolutions, stopped, & next was the starter going click click click...etc! I know my battery is stuffed but an overnight charge will give it some life. Without referring to a vehicle manual I'd say the components giving you trouble are all controlled by the engine control module. So some basic voltage tests are in order, then try another battery, then maybe bench test the alt'. The computer modules in these cars require a base level of voltage to function. If the alt' has failed, killed the battery, then the ECU has nothing to work with. The backfiring is indicative of unburnt air/fuel entering the exhaust & igniting on something hot. Incorrect engine timing or a lack of spark will cause it, combine that with the disappearing dash & you've got either voltage or ECU issues. The shock wave from the big backfire may well have damaged the catalytic converter, exhaust system & exhaust manifold gasket....& possibly was the final straw that broke something electrical (battery cell, alternator) |
