When did a cars performace take your breath away

Hi Guys,
I was 21 years old had a car that was once my sisters a 1964 Chev with a 307 V8 and the first thing I did was get the motor fixed up.
At the time I was still living with my mother in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney and tearing up n down my street in my car nearly ever day of the week.

At the other end of the street was an old guy who had an XY GTHO Phase 3 and he would take it out on Sunday wash it and then put it back in the garage. I am talking about 1977 the year was.

One Sunday Robert who was the old guy up the end of my road came down to where I lived and I was outside washing my car when he said to me " I have watched you with your mates go up and down the road and you think that Chev of yours is pretty fast don't you"? which of course I said " yes".

He told me "to come up to his house in 15 minutes". I got up to his house he backed the GTHO out of the garage and said "get in and do your seat belt up".

At first things went ok he told me the cars still cold but after driving for a while and the engine temperature gauge got to normal he let loose and I can still remember being pushed back into the passenger seat.

The thing was a rocket and the engine roared then he slowed down and drove normally back to our street and put the car back into the garage.
That was the last time I tried to show off how fast my old Chev went down our street.

1967, drove a mates Mini Cooper S 1275. No idea then about torque steer, gave it heaps from standstill and ended up on the pavement. Scared the crap out of me while wondering what went wrong. My mate thought it was hilarious.

Narrow unsealed gravel roads makes any vehicle feel a lot faster.

When I had the Sierra Cosworth 4x4 (tuned), and drove it hard on the gravel roads I was impressed how fast it was. Also during the winter time I was impressed with how fast it could get up to speed, (but then you had no stopping ability, so it could get quite scary if there was a curve or obstacle in front).

I sent my buddy out to hoon in my old Fiat Uno turbo (tuned but rusted wreck that I had) on the narrow gravel roads, and I never seen someone drive it so hard as he did. Both front wheels must have been turning at double the speed of the road all along his little 'rally' drive, with gravel splattering.

When I was young, fastest car around where I lived was my buddy's MB W124 300CE-24 AMG. It was how fast that could be driven along the sealed narrow curved country roads, mountain passes etc, that impressed me. (We are talking double the speed limit, with moose's jumping across the road).
It was a powerful engine at that time, but also the impressive road holding that made that car so very capable for its time.

These days not many cars can beat the performance of motorbikes, at least when the roads quite straight. My 2005 CBR1000RR surprised me many times by unintendedly going on one wheel out of roundabouts, or breaking on one wheel (with the rear above ground). I found that I was driving faster and faster with it as I got used to its capable handling. I sold it before anything bad happened. I still have the 2.3 litre R3, which is probably one of the fastest bikes available from 0 to 100, but it has crap road handling.

Going in a mates GTR. Extremely worked and dog box. That was fast!

Other would be in a Tesla Model S P100D and the Performance Model 3. They're stupidly fast!

Being passenger in an S14 Nissan Silvia with an RB26 conversion complete with big single turbo conversion.

Light and small car with big power RB26.

Another was just a R33 GTS-T but with 400KW at the wheels again as passenger, it was like a light switch it was nothing nothing nothing nothing nothing then it was wheels spinning like mad and steering by throttle rather than steering wheel.

pulled up in my 302C powered rig , and laughed at his brown H,JXZ? with a bonnet up in the driveway.
after we sorted out business , he says "get in" to the old brown sedan , slammed the bonnet , i got in, to a bench seat , ol mate turned on the ignition - BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR RRRRRRRR - whats that ? electric fuel pump .
he got it fired after 30 seconds , backed it out of the drive onto the road and proceeded to do a 2tyre fry for a kilometre(?) laughing his tits off lookin over the bench seat , out the back window the whole way. then lined it up . did a fast FAST launch . one of the quickest jiggers ive ever been in . drag car with plates.

For me some of the high watermarks were when manufacturers took a leap forward in technology. The move from carbys to fuel injection, the introduction of turbocharging and all wheel drive and now electrification.
So cars that I've driven or ridden in that really impressed me, starting in the 80s with a mates HG turbocharged red motor Kingswood, carb, no intercooler, spitting out broken axles once a month. The GC8 WRX in the mid 90's and the 996 Porsche Turbo in the early 2000s. Fast forward to a mate's R35 GTR on launch control and recently a supercharged S550 Mustang.

Early 2000s I had a drive of Possum Bourne's road going WTX STI, phar kme that was impressive. Another was around 1985, I had a test drive of an XA sedan that would lift the front wheels, even at 18 I knew it was gonna kill me.

A client let me drive his ba xr6t manual, first time I had driven one. He had spent $$$ on it and it had around 350-400rwkw. He told me to put my foot down in second, was only doind around 30kph. It went ok but I expected more, then it hit around 3000rpm then I pooed my pants. It went to redline as the rear wheels just turned to smoke. I backed off straightaway as he laughed at me. I did it again but with only 1/2 throttle, the thing pushed me back in the seat so hard it was mind blowing.

Not sure how you can use this power to it’s full potential but bloody hell I’ll never forget it!!!

In the early 80s a mate took me for a drive in his Pontiac Grand Prix, think it was a 68 model.
440 cubues twin Holleys.
Hit the highway and he nailed it. My brother was in the back seat leaning forward talking to us between the buckets. He got thrown back and couldn't pull himself off the seat. Your lungs were touching your back bone.
Speedo went to 150 MILES PER HOUR and we went off the clock, just, by about 5mph.
Driven lots of V8s and some turbos, but this is the most memorable.

Back before Jap Imports became a huge thing (2004/5) I had a mate who got a payout and bought an R33 Skyline GTST with a heap of mods (cost an arm and a leg). Didnt look much from the outside but had a Stroked RB25 and T78 Turbo with supporting mods.. He threw me the keys... Was the first big HP Turbo car i had driven, was like a bloody light switch nothing until 5000rpm then you got EVERYTHING.. Came onto boost so bloody quick.. Was a hell of an experience...

When I was 17 on the day I bought my L34 I was cruising around town with a mate and to entertain the shoppers and announce my arrival I gave it some stick in the main street and before I could blink I was facing the other way.

I was embarrassed, exhilarated and a little bit soiled.

My first experience was in a mates 308 2 door LJ Torana!

Went to a bottle shop and grabbed some alcohol, sitting in the front seat with a box full!

Drove out and was going down the main road then he booted it and I wasn't ready cos my neck snapped back and that box of alcohol was spread out all through his car!

I had the biggest smile on my face! Thats when I caught the V8 bug!

I would have been maybe 13, so 2000. My uncle had just got his 98 wrx back. He likes to brag and always 1 up his mates. So dynoed at 500 to the wheels. Super laggy, but my uncle just wanted a sheet with a number to 1 up his mate who had a 400hp 99 wrx. So nothing, nothing, nothing.... 4000rpm then all the boost. Same day then i jumped in my brothers mates 383 stroker hq tonner. He was still ironing out things as he had just put on a high rise manifold and a 1050cfm carb but i sat shotgun for a drive to eastern creek. Once he got past traction issues, that thing was fast. Once it was ironed out, it made something like 580 to the wheels.
When i was an L plater, the first fast car i drove was a 308 powered uc torana. So it had a 3500rpm converter, dunno the power, but it had slips for 12.8 quarter. Yes it was all chassis flex, but on a launch it would lift a wheel. Only 1, but still, that to me was pretty epic. It was a completely impractical street car, but it made me smile.

After a bit of a think ill have to rethink my comment on a fg turbo(still shocked me at the time) and say a low 12 second gc8 wrx with a rigoli dogbox and a modded r32 gtr,awd and hp just makes your guts feel weird to be sure
The wrx was back in the 2000ish era and it was a rough car to be in,pretty quick for the day,certainly not for this day though,my daily at the time was a flat 15 second xd sedan with a mild x flow,12 seconds felt real quick then.
