Default stupid prices on classics

hey all,
just wanted to have a little rant about the price of classic fords im a young ford lover and would love nothing more then to own my own little rusted out classic to call my own and fix up and give life back to it like some of or most of you guys out there have done. BUT and this is were my rant comes in what the hell is up with the prices of the classics today its becoming so hard to find a decent project car out there without a ridiculous price tag on it
i rember being a very young xc cobra fan and seeing them around stock as a rock clean and beautiful for a massive $9,000 you try finding one in a decent condition for under $40,000 that also goes for any thing with a gt badge or some stripes on it even the great little XD/XE spacks but thats not what ****es me off its the people trying to sell the old coupes and sedans that are so far gone in life (rusted floors,holes the size of watermelons,complet wrecks etc)
trying to get thousands for them : even on ebay its a rare occasion to see some old bomb go cheap to someone that wants to give it another chance at life
it really bugs me because i know now that i will never be able to own a classic or afford to fix one up i just cant bring myself to spend big on someting thats so rusted away as much as i would love to.
i wish it was just like the old days when you could find an old beat up xc/xb sedan on someones front lawn and chuck them a slab and drive that baby home.
anyway i know most of you will say that most of these cars are becoming rare these days and were run out models with only a few ever made but even just the stock cars hold there price good.
but anyway il stop going on and on

whats your opinion on tha price that the old classics are holding wreked or not?

im back off to ebay to keep trying to find a cortina or xb

around leongatha they are probably all rustwed away anyway... there are still some good cheapies around if you look out for them. i have a good te corty ghia 6cyl you can have for $500 but im probably a bit far away from you. i actually went to school in leongatha but have never returned for a look. i must do it one day.

Yes X series falcons were cheap, you could buy a 3 bedroom home in good suburb for under $75K and the average wage was 350 bucks a week.

Times change.

You will just have to wait till all the baby boomers die off and the price of these cars will fall to a more realistic level, dont know if they will be cheap again though.

A bit far away !!!! Get in the car and grab the cortina. They were missiles the six cylinder model. Not many good ones of them left....................

Yep that is a fairly good description of a 6 cylinder cortina.

damn i had a good chuckle at that, funniest #hit i have read all year.

on the point of old classics. i picked up my van for 1000 bucks about 4 years ago. it was regisitered with a clevo and disc brake front end all in the melbourne trading post. i drive it every day.

our gal we picked up for just under 10k
it passed a r/w easily and has had about 18mths of problem free daily driving.

you cant expect to pay peanuts for a show car mate, it doesn't work like that. but there are still massive amounts of old coons out there and there are alot in very good condition for not alot of money.

Every now and then i get keen and have a bit of a look around to see what you could pick up a project car for and then lose a bit of heart when you see what you get for the money. Also i thought i would continue on with the same off topic, my dad grew up in leongatha 50's, 60's and 70's i think.

the best bet would be to grab a nice xd/xf fairmont or the like while they are still cheap. they will pick up over the next couple of years

I think the price for older classics is absolutley perfect ...... always has been, even when you could buy a GT in 1997 for $50,000 and the same one in 2007 for $350,000. At the time ..... that was market value for both years.

They will always be the price they are when people are buying. Thats it. No one really can say ......... "ridiculous price tag'. Personally it may be, but not compared to market price.

If someone asks for $100,000 for a pile of rust, it probably won't sell. If it does sell .... then the price was OK.

Don't give up though. There are relative bargains out there and thats what you have to wait for. A lot of driving and looking and they do pop up when someone does not know what the market price is.

My pop told me the other day he use to own a GT-HO phase 2. Said he is kicking himself now he sold it all those years ago. Said he paid 8k for it. But I agree, paying several hundred thousand dollars for an old phase 3 or something similiar is BEYOND reason IMHO.

I was born in Leongatha and my parents lived there for years.. hows that for continuing the off topic going.

theyre still out there ,after dragging a perfectly good xp coupe home for a mate for 3grand ,we all thought it was too good to be true but went on the hunt for it anyway and it paid off ,we were lucky but they are out there ,dont give up mate keep looking

You don't do up classics to make money. There's a reason for that. IF people paid the price you would have to ask after restoring a classic, no-one would buy it.

Depends what your looking for though, are you looking for a project, an already started project, a nearly complete project, or a fully restored (finished) project?

Pick your car and where you want to start, then look around.

You'll find most 'already started' projects are cheaper than a similar car, stock as a rock driven by someones grandmother.

If your wanting a GT HO P3, then good luck to you sir. Is the asking price is steep for something like a HO P3? For the average Joe, yeah, yeah it is. for someone who WANTS that car, then no its probably not. Things are WORTH what people are willing to pay. Besides, 300 were built, rumoured only 100 survive today, an Australian motorsport legend.......how can it not be worth the $500,000 odd bucks being asked?

As others have said, they are still out there.
I come across "X" series cars nearly every week in country Victoria.
I found 2 XA sedans in one yard this week. (find out in 2 weeks if they are for sale)

well the way i think about it is, would i rather spend $500,000 on some fancy lambo supercar or 500,000 on the best australian built car ever made that is truley amazing....

Buy a more current car in fair to good nick that you can restore that will eventually become a classic but just what would you buy? Will some of the more recent cars become classics and collectable in the next 10 or 20 years. Ford you have the ed sprint, tickford, commo you have the vh, vk, vl, ss and anything brock..........even the brock eb falcon. Probably pick up some of these for less than 10k and the parts are relatively available and cheap now. Fast fwd 10 years who knows it's anyones guess. Who would have thought a good condition xd esp 79 model easily gets 20k+ now?

thats the thing, will these 10 - 15 year old cars become classics?? maybe I should keep the AU - maybe in 50 years it will be a classic??? : : :

memories of paddock bashin back in the early eighties with a mate in his ol' bomb... Blue XAGT, 351 auto, with windback sunroof etc - he used to abuse the crap out of it..... I remember thrashin it around on dirt roads before I had a licence. makes me cry now that I didn't realise the value of said car.

hi, there are still good buys , have a look at what i picked up for $300 yesterday on classic car section under xc sedan, was going to pull it apart for bits for coupe but may do it up now. keep looking, they are there.

Yep, we're all different.....I'd take the Lambo in a heartbeat....I thought the XW/XY's were ugly back in 1970 when my Dad and every other bloke in that era had one (or otherwise an HT/HG) and 39 years later that opinion still stands. I don't care how much they're worth.....Now an XA is a different story

i was talking to someone yesterday who saw a Mini Cooper for $40k. these used to be bought and sold for 3 grand. as has been said, these cars were once cheap. why not look at something that does fit within your price range and try to find something that suits. in your shoes, i would consider a nice XD 351. but it depends on exactly what you want. a 6cyl Cortina has been mentioned, which are very cheap right now, even for really good ones. the trick is to find something that was a bit different, such as an S Pack. mechanically a 2 litre Escort is identical to an RS, but guess which one sells for the higher price.

Why not start with something modernish like the first of the XR6's or XR8's to restore; they are cheap now; who knows what will happen down the track. Even the XR8 sprints, some seem to be selling too cheaply in my opinion.

I would keep and eye out for anything being and the right place at the right time heps.. Be patient and something will come up the longer you wait the more money you will have to buy a better example/spend on resto

Anything with a chrome bumper seems to have value. Even Bedfords are on the rise. Too bad for me.

Hopefully they come up with a way to make crate bodies like they have in the states then we wont have such a big problem finding these old girls. I heard they're quite expensive but at the rate the classic car market his risen it wont be that much of a shock.

I spoke to Nigel at Mustangs & Australian classics, he says that a guy has purchased $600,000 worth of new old stock from ford at some point, took it all to Thailand, along with another million dollars to tool up and produce New XY body shells, apparently the first prototype is finished and new shells are only a few months off, around the $20,000 mark with all hanging panels, and the best news is that coupes are said to be about 18 months to 2 years away, new front end sheet metal is not far away either, such as bonnets and guards to suit XA and XB, of course you'll need a wheel chair as they'll cost an arm and a leg.

These bodyshells wont have a VIN or anything, how are you going to go getting them licensed?
