To those of you who've had a vasectomy, especially young men, any regrets? In general how has it affected you mentally, or even socially. I'm considering it and I am young, childless and looking forward to having a career, but the fear of having an unwanted pregnancy causes me huge amounts of stress.

If a job brings you more joy than having children then go for it. I think its a bit drastic. Contraception works just as well.
I have a career, and I have a child. And I really love being able to do things with my son. He brings me much joy, more than my career ever will. We had our son after we had our careers. I know which one I prefer. One thing to remember, careers end at some stage. Retirement or redundancy. There is life after your job ends. Good luck with what ever your decide. |

There are many things that you can do to prevent an unplanned pregnancy. The first thing that comes to mind is getting married. Once that ring goes on her finger, you’ll never have to worry about pregnancy issues again. Seriously though, I always thought that I’d never get around to having kids, and if it was up to me, I would still be thinking about it. I can understand where you’re coming from but as bucky says, there’s nothing quite like having fun with your kids and the joy they bring you. I know that these procedures can be reversed but there’s plenty of other ways to solve this. Cheers

I had the snip many years ago but only after my wife and I had discussed it (dare I say) at length. We had 2 young boys at the time (who are now both young men) but we decided it was the best option for us, both financially and emotionally. We have no regrets What you need to carefully consider is whether or not in the years to come you might meet Miss Right and would like to settle down and start a family, vasectomy reversal is a possibility but it doesn't have a very high success rate :(
Nowadays there are a lot more successful forms of contraception to choose from, having a Vasectomy should be considered permanent so you'll want to be absolutely certain before making the decision to have one Last edited by Russ; 04-02-2012 at 11:29 PM. |

OP - I think you will find that being single and not wanting kids isn't good enough grounds for a vasectomy - have heard about it being quite a task to even have done, and some of the people i knew were 30, with kids!
Im at the stage now after just having our 2nd child, if its something i am going to look at doing in the next few years if the mrs and i decide not to have any more kids

Is this post for real? Sorry, I didn't realise it was hard to use a condom. Or even spermicide for that matter. Getting a vasectomy at a young age, and not having any children, you're bound to regret it. Very silly thing to do.

Use contraception. We have 2 kids and spent the last 3years trying the reverse gear method. After an accident last month, my fiance has the 3yr implant. We spoke about vasectomy but I just wasn't comfortable with the idea and we may want another child. I know what it is like to be young and think "I am never having kids" but I am glad I have my 2, even if I am pretty young. 28 with a 6 and 3yr old.

I went through years of debilitating pain due to post vasectomy pain syndrome had to have a reversal to get rid of the pain . most doctors won't tell you about this despite it happening to some degree in 10% of vasectomys. think before you act

Sounds like you're the type of person that lives to work, rather than work to live.
Seriously, if you reckon a job/career is more important than kids, you need to sit down in the mirror and have a good hard look at yourself. Having kids can be a PITA, but the happiness they bring over rules that. IMA, I've got 5 and love them to bits. Money can't buy happiness, so worth thinking about.

My eldest is 3 and i cant imagine a day without her - she and her little sister are the best thing that happened to me (apart from my wife ) In saying that though, i do have friends that are 40+ and dont have kids and are quite content at being aunties and uncles - depends on the person i guess, but saying it at a young age is quite naive i think

fair enough, I get what all of you are saying, it's just the ;little accidents in life that I can't afford at the moment. I don't live to work, but I am looking forward to a career, and obviously a man in my position is using conventional contraception. It's a thing I'm considering because I can't see myself wanting children, and that isn't a bad thing, think what you may of that decision.

i don't think anyone wants kids or thinks they'll want them at 20 but life changes and so do your priorities.. if your in a steady relationship your girl can get depo needle lasts 3 months or a implant last 3 years or so.. there are a lot of options rather then disconnecting your sack, just make sure it's what you want, because if it's not it can and will have a dramatic effect on your life in the future
what do you tell your girl in 10 years when she's ready to have kids, oh sorry love forgot to mention, got me bag snipped back when i was 20, sorry about that.. |
