Just a few notes which might help someone with DIY oil changes
on the Mondeo 2007-2014 diesel. The oil filter is upside-down, which can lead to spills. It's also cramped, unlike my old EF when I used to sit in the engine bay. Don't remove the filter housing too soon after the engine has been running. Result: oil in hard to reach places. Wait half an hour at least before unscrewing the filter housing, which allows the oil to drain out of the filter. Another problem is actually getting the housing off. I use a 27mm ring spanner (el cheapo) with one end cut off to leave 250mm total. This works fine for me, but there is a Ford tool like a 27mm ring spanner bent into a C shape with a half-inch drive at the other end. Otherwise it's going to be very difficult. Because the filter mounting points up, I blow the area out with compressed air before removing the housing, in case sand etc falls in. Lubricate the rubber catches for the engine cover with dilute soap or thin smear of castor oil/rubber lubricant if it's hard to release, else the cover could break. Mine was broken when I bought it. Unclip the filler neck and move it aside to get access to the filter. Drain plug is 21mm. Undertray 10mm. I fill with 5.5 litres Nulon full synthetic diesel oil. That brings it to the mid-point on the dipstick scale, where I like to keep it. I check the level only in the morning after it's been standing all night, otherwise it tends to be smeared out. While I'm under the car I relax and shine a very bright torch into all the nooks and crannies, wondering what I'm looking at. :-). Level ground and safety stands of course. |

A couple of points I forgot.
Oil must be suitable use with for diesel particulate filters. Reset the service oil light, described elsewhere on this forum. |

Thanks. The oil filter has this little slot (see photo) which also might bear on the issue of oil spilling. Maybe cracking the seal lets air in here. I'm not sure.

Great write up, and yes, if you slightly unscrew the filter and leave it like that for approx 5 min the slot that Rondeo mentions allows the oil to drain...and no spills....It is much easier than I expected..

Don't use a spanner on the oil filter housing - it's a pain as already noted. It's dead easy with a socket and extension.
Oil the O-ring and screw the housing on until it stops. Don't over tighten - its the O-ring that seals the filter. Sent from my SM-G9208 using Tapatalk

Further to changing the filter without spilling oil: today I noticed there looks like a spring loaded valve in the base where the filter goes. Looks like unscrewing the housing until the the seal is cleared not only opens a vent slot in the housing but a valve in the the base, allowing the filter to drain. Hadn't noticed that before.

Here are some part numbers from various manufacturers for drop in oil filters for 2010 onwards (MB/MC) Mondeos with 2.0TDCi 120kw engine;
Mann-Filter HU711/51x / Mahle OX 339/2 D Eco / Hengst E44D110 / Ryco R2663P / 3M5Q6744AA Motorcraft AFL98 / FoMoCo 6C1Q6744AA 1373069 (focus?) / FoMoCo 6C1Q6744BA 1717510 (ranger?) and dont forget a new Sump Plug & Washer I personally use the Mann-Filter HU711/51x inbetween Ford 12mth services. I found it rather difficult (impossible) to get a genuine FoMoCo oil filter, as the dealers where only selling the Motorcraft AFL98 and no one could drill down on the correct FoMoCo oil filter. I hope this helps some guys with DIY's...

Did my first "at home" service on the Mondeo yesterday...
Oil and filter, rotate tyres and a quick wash - 4 hours! Used to be able to do the same on my Commodore in about 20 minutes. I had to do the shortened 27mm spanner trick as well. Of course my cheapo spanners only go up to 25mm so I had to cut up one of my good ones... Not sure how you used a socket and extension NZ XR6? I couldn't fit the socket and ratchet over the filter and under the bracket above for the fuel filter, also I couldn't see the filter housing at all once my hand was in there trying to get it undone. I found out the hard way you cannot pour the oil in too quickly. I have a wide mouth funnel and was pouring straight from the 10 litre container, the oil backed up in the filler and overflowed between the filler and bottom of the funnel. Lost about a litre down the side of the block and onto the ground before I realised. Apart from these problems, smooth sailing. Hopefully now I have the technique, I can do it a bit quicker.

It should be quicker next time, but the under tray is a right pain.
I have a MB so there isn't a fuel filter in the way. I did it with an adjustable spanner the first time as some low lifes had stolen all my tools - that was a real pain.

It was a good tip about the filter cap.
I recently did a service and dropped the sump first to get it out of the way then started on the filter. As I was undoing the filter I saw the 'Drain & Arrow' marking on the cap. By this stage the oil had drained in the sump and nearly stopped dripping. So continuing unscrewing the filter cap slowly I found the marking on the cap and the marking on the housing (triangle @ 3 O'clock) eventually it opened up, aligned up and drained the oil without the mess. Confirmed with the dribbles into the drain pan. |

Bought one of those 27mm kingchrome gear spanners and cut it to 225mm overall length. Can't wait for another oil change ;) |

Looks like someone has slightly overdone things judging from the state of the hex. Either that or the wrong spanner. Specified torque is 25Nm. If you have a suitable torque wrench you can check it out with a bolt in a vice. Depending on your age it doesn't feel like much at all.
One of the pleasures of getting old is losing that confident sense of torque? |

That thread explains why some are able to use a standard socket and others aren't. It depends on whether it's euro IV or V. With euro V you can't see the filter housing from above.

I've just taken advantage of the "Brexit Crisis", ordered one of these crows foot filter tools for $99 posted - was around $130 last week. At least I'll be able to use a torque wrench and do the filter up properly.

I bought a low profile 27mm 3/8th drive socket from total tools - its a special order socket specially for oil changes....best $14.00 ever spent...was able to get the socket and drive nicely on the housing

I modified my engine bay.
I have a Focus...but hear me out. We have the same diesel engine. Anybody know what the drain arrow on the housing is? I couldn't really see any indication inside the housing that there's something there.
