My first hand experience with Rangers, yes we have replaced a few intercooler hoses, only on PX1 models, never have we replaced an Engine for any reason, have seen a couple rear main leaks though. But certainly no secret documents about any of these. Daily mail is known for writing rubbish.
I cant comment on the Toyota side of things though

All manufacturers do the same things with all sorts of cars. Why are they singling out utes?

I'd say cause of their position in the market.

Is the journalist talking about Tech bulletins?

Why would you fix something that wasn't broken?

If people complain fix it, if they don't complain then obviously there is no problem.

Journalists' standards have really dropped.

Daily Mail doesn't have standards, they are the lowest of the low and just plain lazy "journalists"

The lack of qualifying empirical data on "failures" tells me that
they got their hands on Technical Service Bulletins.

As most may already know, these are just recommended fix procedure for
serious faults that have occurred in the past and simply what Ford will pays for.
There is no data to back up wide spread engine failure (check for aftermarket tune?)

This reminds me of the fire in the Everest press car, misrepresentation of the highest order
and when we know what really went on completely different to that portrayed.

Automotive journalism and ethics in reporting?
Give me a break.

Yes, I read that little snip. It seems Toyota is like any other manufacturer, in saying it is quite normal for the donk to gobble dust. Denyial at it's finest.

Doesn't seem to be anything hidden in these "secret documents" that a 10 second google search on your choice of vehicle wouldn't warn you of

I've had 3 PX1 Rangers.

Intercooler failure (plastic end tank split and blew up), cold side intercooler hose split and automatic transmission failure. These are common problems, in fact so much so the dealer I used kept all these parts in stock as they were doing a couple of 3.2l Auto Rangers per week.

I hope the transmission issue was fixed with PX MkII.

I Was working in Karratha a few years back, the 2.2 XL PX2
suffered a split intercooler hose like the issue on the 3.2,
it's most likely parts contracts shaved to the bone that
causes these not too infrequent failures...

Most of these get rectified during a service.

When the car is booked in, a vin check on the manufacturers database brings up any outstanding recalls/product improvement programs.

Serious faults result in letters being sent to the owners.
