The news comes after Volkswagen’s announcement in June that it will likely join forces with Ford to strengthen both companies’ overall performance in the commercial vehicle arena, and Ford's plans to cut underperforming models such as the mid-sized Mondeo from its range. News agency Rueters reported this week that Ford of Europe will cut the Mondeo, as well as the Galaxy and S-Max people movers that share the same mid-sized underpinnings, from its line-up, potentially as soon as next year. It also claimed Ford's restructuring plans could lead to job losses for upto 24,000 workers across the globe, with the majority of those coming from its European divisions. Linked to the blue oval's rationalisation plans is the alliance between Volkswagen and Ford to co-develop a range of light commercial vehicles in the future. A memorandum of understanding between the companies was confirmed earlier this year, and the head of VW's light commercial division, Thomas Sedran, has spoken publicly for the first time, indicating the deal is progressing and likely to be inked soon. "When we finalize this alliance, you can be assured it will be balanced. There is no junior, nor senior partner, but rather two companies at eye level that will closely cooperate with one another," he said during an interview at VW's headquarters this week. “We realised fairly quickly that it worked from a cultural perspective and there was the right chemistry with the main actors,” Sedran said. "At the end of the day both sides need to sign, but I'm confident since it's all been constructive and in a spirit of partnership.” While Volkswagen sales lead Ford for the most part, the blue oval’s Transit van outperforms VW’s equivalent Transporter. The Amarok ute is also due for replacement soon, and could be teamed with the next-generation Ranger, while Volkswagen's bold Tanoak full-sized pick-up, revealed earlier this as a coVolkswagen has shown dominance in the new car sales area with 10.7 million vehicles sold worldwide last year, compared to Ford’s 6.6 million.
